transmission wont get into gear....

so when i got my RB20DET motor/transmission blah blah blahi just tried to see if i could put the transmission into gear (like i can on my ka24e as in moving the shifter side to side and going into gear freely with out the car started )but i cant move it side to side , i can get 1st and 2nd, wont go into 3,4,5,R...btw the transmission is sitting with the drive shaft end face up not sure if that is affecting it?

why dont you have the transmission in the postion it should be in when trying to shift thru gears?worst case senario is that there are 2 gears engaged at once (which ive never seen) but chances are its because of how the transmission is oriented.

you sure it's going into another gear? (1st-2nd or 2nd-1st) when my shift linkage broke on my celica (yeah fwd) it would stay in 6th, but i could move the shifter all i wanted into 5th.

so... something could be broken on the inside me thinks....

hmm thanks for the imput, ill try to put the transmission on the motor and see if it helps from the positioning
