hey fellow nicoers, i have an 89 240 with ka-e motor and trans. it's completely stock, it has 150,xxx miles on it and is in fairly good condition. I've had the car since september and i know it has a few problems like when it's in first gear it makes a weird bird chirping sound, it also feels like wheel hop when it's in first gear, mostly in the lower rpm's. My question is lately 1st and 2nd gear have not been going in gear. When i do finally get them in, it takes all of my strength to get it in there. When the cars in neutral and you try to put it into 1st gear you can hear a loud thud, it won't go into gear but you hear the thud, it's even louder when you try to put it into 2nd. It's been doing it a lot lately. Could it be that the trans shifted somehow or is it my clutch, i checked the transmission fluid and it's fine,i don't know what it could be but any help from anyone would be appreciated greatly.

Thank You.

You mention a clutch so I'm assuming it's a 5-speed manual. First off, checking the fluid on manuals is a pain in the a$$. If it's full, do you know if it's GL-4 or GL-5? You can usually tell by the smell but if you're not used to the way they smell you can't tell. If it's GL-5 and you got to that point then well, new transmission because GL-5 has an addictive that disolves brass (which is used for our syncro's). I'd change the fluid anyway just for the hell of it.

Drifter- Ive searched the archives and cant find help on a problem similar to yours - my car will not go into any gear while sitting idle. when car is off it goes in fine to all gears. if i can get a rolling start it shifts o.k., even downshifting. any advice would be appreciated. thanks

if it feels like wheel hop when starting off, and you arent breaking the tires loose, its clutch chatter. usually a good sign of a clutch going out.
