I had a mechanic tell me that my transmission has had a bearing failure. This has been what has caused my shifter from going in gear. I am considering a rebuild-has anyone else done this? How much does it normally cost?

I have also possibly found the rarity-an i30 with a 5 speed. I may be buying the transmission out of the car. WHat will have to be changed with thistransmission? I know the cv shafts will have to be replaced, but what else?

Thanks

Mike

I just did a rebuild. Transmission failure is a big cuase of grief when it comes to Maximas and I30s, and the number one cause of transmission failure from these Borg Warner pieces of junk is bearing failure. Any decent shop is going to want to do a complete rebuild, so if they can even find the parts they need you should expect to pay anywhere between $1000 and $3500 for the rebuild after labor. If you feel like getting dirty, and I mean REALLY dirty, then try doing it yourself. Chances are, if you're at all handy with a wrench, you'll do at least as good of a job... if not better even... and you'll save a ton of money. Trust me on this... I've been through 3 transmissions in under 3 years and the one I finally did MYSELF is holding up better than any. Good luck!
