If you've never torn apart a transmission before i dont think i'd start with this one unless you have a spare car and lots of time. I've never done it, although that doesnt mean you couldn't do it, It is not easy especially if you dont rebuild trannies every day. You have the added hassle of finding parts etc. , but if you had a good manual and a shot of courage you could try it - assuming you can find all the parts you need (and of course you are going to need new synchros too.)
My old trans on my 88 D21 Z24 started making noise. I took a chance and swapped it for a junkyard one for $100. It works fine. But most people would probably not want to chance it like i did - if you remove the trans youself you can maybe save some labor cost if you take it to somebody to rebuild it. Or maybe you can find one on craigslist or something from a lower mileage truck to just swap it in - any pick a part junkyards in your area?
