Update----

After 600 miles....I decided to have the transmission flushed again...

....no luck....still no torque after it drops into 4th......

...I guess I''ll just drive it til it stops.....

...talked to an Infiniti service guy yesterday when I was trying to get service records on a Q that I am considering.... he says he's been real impressed with 97 and up.... says the only consistent problem he sees with those cars are O2 sensors.

Changed a few knock sensors on 97 and later, belts, hoses, rack boots, shocks, tension rods........O2 . But lots less than on 90-96.

Think the highest mileage one we see is just at 200k.

Thanks, Tech....

I think my target is a 97-99 10-14k, depending on the mileage...

Would love to do low 50k mileage (99) to low 70k mileage (97)

Maybe somebody will come to the plate.... my local dealer is actually working with me if I give them a VIN to get service records...

There's one on Ebay, a 98, with 67k miles for a buy it now at 13.5k. I am sure a Naples, Florida car was taken good care of...

From a reliability standpoint, yes... transmission is same as 94-96 models but with less hp/torque to wear it out. Timing chain design is better.

But the 97-01 Q45 is the Japan market Cima which is a notch below the President (90-96 Q45).

Not as performance oriented and the interior has a cheaper feel, but still a good bang for the buck on the used market.

I think 2000 is the sweet point in Generation II (Y33) Q45.

Year-to-Year Changes

1998 Infiniti Q45: New front safetybelt pretensioners were installed this year, and the mechanical odometer was replaced with a liquid crystal display unit. 1999 Infiniti Q45: New standard features included a power rear-window sunshade, power trunklid pull-down, and high-intensity xenon gas headlights. The Touring edition (Q45t) gained dual-mode electronically controlled shock absorbers. 2000 Infiniti Q45: New active front head restraints were designed to minimize whiplash injury in rear-end collisions. Rear child-seat anchors were new, as was one-touch open/close operation for the standard moonroof and all power windows. A newly optional navigation system with dashboard touch-screen replaced a simpler, nonvideo system. Available in limited numbers, a 10th Anniversary Touring edition had machine-finish wheels, special badges and upholstery, wood/leather steering wheel, and bird's-eye maple interior accents. New platinum-tip spark plugs were good for 100,000 miles between tuneups. 2001 Infiniti Q45: Body-color door handles, bird's-eye maple interior trim, and a leather/simulated-wood steering wheel were the only changes for 2001.

well, I would love an Anniversary Edition...but that may be pushing it too much price wise....

They look and sound sweet.

t and Anniversary Editions are very nice, but I am not sure what the trick shocks accomplish since the normal is sufficiently firm, but the wheels and tires do accomplish something. But this is the first Infiniti wheel without the machined lip for weights. Wife didn't like the Bird's Eye Maple (too yellow and garish) and I have to agree, but it may have been real wood.

The Y33 seem to have more arm room and legroom in the driver's seat. I am 6' 240 lbs. and barely fit in a G50 driver's seat. But I drive Italian style with arms extended, not with wheel as an elbow rest.

Her car has TCS, auto headlights, side air bags. Completely different than G50 in look and somewhat tighter in road feel, but same or better quality of build.__________________Brian1995 Q45 & Q45t

Iam curious when ever most of us talk about servicing the transmission we talk about dropping the pan, replacing the filter and flush, also of course cleaning pan and mannet. What about the external filter up by the radiator? Is it not mentioned because it is worthless or is it because it is overlooked?? Wayne

Only some Q's have that external filter... in fact I think it's an option? Not sure on that one though. It seems like there have been discussions in the past on what type of filter it uses, but you're right - those discussions have been rare.

1000 mile update

Still the same.... driving it regularly...if I have to accelerate I just downshift to 3rd....

or drive it in 3rd...and then put it in drive at speed.

That's pretty much the way I drive anyway with a fully functional transmission. Without a filter replacement with the flush and checking the hoses for obstruction, you are not really sure how the transmission is performing. The 1990-1993 with the single OEM heat exchanger seem to benefit the most from the addition of an auxiliary transmission fluid cooler.

The Y33 transmission (1997-2001 Q45) is not the same transmission as the G50, but a lighter duty version that is very similar in design.__________________Brian1995 Q45 & Q45t & 2000 Q45

If you do flushes at reasonable intervals you wont need the filter.

Mine came out when the transmission cooler came on.

Also I ratehr not have the extra restriction in there.

I think only the 94-96 may have those. ( I only seen one and that ws on a 94 the otehr 3 G50's I owned were 90-93 Q's and none had that)

Fred..:)

My 91 had the external filter, up by the radiator. TJ told me the filter was only sold as part of a kit that was installed when the 91 trans was replaced. The kit is too expensive just for a new filter.

For those with the external filter, think of it this way. If you have not personally replaced that external filter, it is probably doing more harm than good. Best to take it out , install a cooler, do a flush, drop, and internal filter replacement, and then keep it clean from there.

If you are not into doing the flush/drop-just take the external filter out now. Free!

Id like to try one of those external kits from summit racing..... uses a cheap fram filter, you could replace that every other oil change or something like that.......

It was only like $30 for the kit, and came with everything.......

I got some free Citgo atf+3 from work and did a pan drop and cooler line purge on a '98 Bonneville w/ 80k mi. OOPS ---boy did that slip! (made it right w/Dex III) On a thread here is a link to fluid/slippage/clutch material which I read after that incident. The moral is... which ATF actually went in !? -Squee
