1990 Q with 106,000 miles. Recently while driving up a rather pronounced (5-7%) incline on the freeway at about 75 MPH, I floored the car and the tach went from 2,500 to 6,000, with no acceleration from the drivetrain. I let off the gas. Have done it again on the same stretch of highway 3 of 4 times and I get the same result. My guess is transmission slipping??--although the slippage is only in O/D, never the other gears.

During regular driving, the shift points are smooth and never miss, however the shifting is a little slow--not crisp like my wifes new van. Car had a mobil 1 flush, transmission cooler, and filter change at 93,000. The last flush was pretty fast and had good pressure during the flush. I am running the 93 TCU for 1st gear starts.

The cars history isn't so good----first trans service (flush) at 86,000 which plugged the heat exchanger and filter. The owner gave up and her and sold her when the transmission whined and slipped. After unplugging the heat exchanger, 2 flushes and pan drops, the car was brought back to life and has been roadworthy for the last 20,000 miles.

Is this the end of the road for the transmission, or is there any adjustment/test that can confirm one way or another??

Sounds dead to me, replace it before it strands you.

This likely pre-programmed pre-mature transmission death.

You may need a new transmission :( but at least it helped you get a great deal, when you bought the car I amsure.

Fred...:)

I have been dealing with this problem with my 90Q since August. Ironically the problem happened almost immediately after a flush...and mine was well maintained...although no Mobil 1, just standard...

...anyway...we have been driving it since.... if I hit a grade, I immediately downshift to 3....most of the time, I just gingerly push it along.... when it goes... I will part out the car...reserving some of the parts for my 94Q.

It will be interesting to see how long it goes like this....

Maybe I am dreaming, but maybe someone on the board will email with a Level 10 rebuild that just came out of a wrecked 1990-1991 Q, with maybe....6,000 miles on it...price is free.... you just come haul it away!! The roads are fairly slippery in the colder climates aren't they??

Even a good used well maintained transmission is worth money. I received $500 for my 185,000 mile unit [and I only gave a personal 90 day warranty]...........that was a year ago and the owner is happy having driven 20,000 miles on it since then.

Mostly the junkyard and JDM units are junk, having sat for years with the acidic ATF melting things away.

"Ironically the problem happened almost immediately after a flush................."

Then why didn't you immediately do a pan drop and REFLUSH, obviously the 1st flush free up somthings that are now circulating!

Interestingly similar stories in a few regards. I had my Q45 transmission flushed at 90k miles. At 98k miles, I had the dealer do a complete inspection of the car (including the transmission) since it was about to go off warranty.

Yet, shortly after 100k (103k, as I recall), it stopped going into reverse. Found metal particles in the ATF and another flush did not cure the problem. Expensive problem, since it happened after the warranty expired! :(

Moral for me was: if you do not look after the transmission properly to begin with (and the previous owner of my Q must not have!), then a flush can precipitate a transmission failure!

tech-- I did the pan drop and re-flush...actually two re-flushes.... i figured something was freed up as well...

I just didn't want to go into a third flush....maybe in a few months...tough problem to deal with...
