I recently replaced the transmission on my 1994Q and had an external cooler installed. Now I have a vibration at driving speeds. I tried shifting the car into neutral at higher speeds to see if the vibration would go away; it didn't. The transmission shop tells me that the insulators on the propeller shaft 1st tube were dry rotted and basically fell apart on R/R which is probably the cause for the vibration. They told me that they placed alignment marks on the shaft before disassembly to insure the correct alignment on reassembly. They state the only fix is to replace the propeller shaft since there is no replacement procedure for the worn insulators. My question: is there a replacement procedure for the insulators besides buying a new propeller shaft($$$)? I also heard of a shaft without insulators...are they reliable? Thanks for any input!!

So did you replace the 3rd motor (transmission) mount and the associated exhaust hangars also?

What does T-3 say?

Take a close look at the rubber. Hard to believe that they "fell apart" since all the 94's I've seen still had supple rubber on the centerline bearing. However, it is is real easy to tear when performing a one man removal. Or with even two incompetent mechanics. 90-93 are an entirely different matter... on those, the rubber is like tissue paper by now. I tore the rubber on 3 driveshafts before I finally learned how to remove and install (alone).

I've researched this issue to death so you get to benefit....You will find that getting a good used shaft will be your cheapest option.

I have an extra 94' shaft which you can have for $150. The centerline rubber is still supple and every now and then, I spray it with a shot of rubber conditioner. I just sold another from a 95' and am waiting for pickup. Oh, also I'm in ATL so you can have it quickly.

Why this is a cheap option....

Thanks Maxnix & DrewQ45 for your quick response...sorry it took me sooo long to respond, but I just got back in town. No I did not replace the third motor mount and the associated exhaust hangars. How many exhaust hangars do I need? And DrewQ45, I would be interested in purchasing your used 94 shaft...please give me your contact info. Also in the FSM on pg. PD-5 it states: "If propeller shaft is replaced with a new one, replace all bolts with "9" bolts. Do not use 'A', 'B' or 'C' bolts." What are the "9" bolts? Thanks again guys...you are a life saver!!

My 2nd link above has pics of the exhaust hangars and transmission mount. You can reuse the same bolts. I am e-mailing you my contact info.

JasperQ45,

Welcome to the club! I agree with everything Drew is telling you... the shop that replaced your transmission probably tried to unbolt the driveshaft at the flex plate, rather than removing it properly. Please don't dicount Brian's suggetion about T3. It looks like you're very close to Atlanta... definitely closer than some of us that drive for several hours, or several days to get there! I would suggest stopping by there the next time you're in the area just to check the place out. You will be amazed at their knowledge about the early Q45. They are, hands down, the top Q experts in the country!

Thanks Q451990( Heath) for the info. I will check out T3 next time I'm in Atlanta. I'm buying a used shaft from DrewQ45 and taking the advice from Maxnix by replacing the transmission mount and the exhaust hangars. I'll be calling IOS in the morning for parts. Thanks again!....you guys rule!!

Jasper,

Thanks for purchasing the driveshaft. I hope everything works out for you. Give the installer a copy of the FSM or they should able to look it up the install process.

Let us know how it works out.

I lookes up the Diagram. I hope they did not separate the drive shaft. If they did they might have lined up the splines. if they are one or to this will make your car vibrate.

A mechanic at the dealer did this on my dadds supra. I had to search for marks and had to take it on and of maybe 12 times to get the right lineup.
