I know where to find rebuild kits and all of that, I also have the space and basic mechanical knowlege to complete the process. What I dont know, is if there are any specific tools needed for the job like C-clamp pliers or whatever. I also dont know about checking for clearences or what tools are used to do that.

Also, could someone shine some light on the cost of getting a stock gearset cryo-treated (maybe even shotpeened?) and where I would get something like this done.

Not many discussions on this, hopefully someone has some experience they can share.

http://nitrofreeze.com/ this should get you pointed in the right direction. there are other companies out there, this one was recommended to me for doing some brake rotors.

lookng throught the fsm shows no specialized tools. various drifts, puncihes (sizes given) and pullers are all they show. if you have a decent set of tools you should be ok. i would get a couple different gear pullers and snap ring pliers. get the fsm for that year transmission if you don't already, their almost all available as zip files on the web. it shows all the measurements and checks you need to make in the back of the section under service data and specifications. if need i can scan a few pages for you. i have fsm's for 90-98.

btw where did you find a rebuild kit? i paid to have one rebuilt last year, but now i wish i had an extra to play with.

There isn't really a rebuild kit for manual transmissions. Just go to a local transmission shop and they should be able to order anything you need. Generally you will want to replace all the bearings and syncronizers. Of course, then you need to set all your clearances.

Master Repair Kit is $315. It comes with everything but the gears and casing. Bearings, syncros, gaskets, everything.

I'm getting a spare stripped SR motorset, and rebuild the transmission on that so I have very little downtime and as much time as I want to do the actual rebuild.

EDIT: After reading that cryotreating site, im going to get everything cryotreated! mwahahahaha
