transmission question

ok so heres the deal, i was driving home from the indy meet and when i was at about 70 or 80 and accelerated slowly (acc. button on cruis or going up a hill) the car would rec till like 5000rpm (it is intially at 3300) and then drop back down to normal. So i think transmission is going, so my question is will a s14 auto transmission bolt up to my 89 sohc engine. I am leaving for army and dont want to put any big money in this thing and swap is out of question because my dad wont let me. I know there are a couple people doing conversions so i thought i could probably get one of their trannys cheap. So real question what auto trannys will bolt to my 89 s13. Oh i have hud if that makes any difference.
