the other day i am driving to a friends house and it feels like the clutch is slipping. on my way home, i was unable to shift into 1, 2 or 3. i can start the car in 1, and with the clutch pedal pressed in, let off the brake and it will drive itself with the idle. but to shift i have to go straight to 4, 5 works ok. i checked the transmission fluid it was full, but was a nasty brown color, what is it sposed to be?the slave cylander was replaced a few months ago, and the clutch fluid is full. thanks for any help.

A few questions; How did you check to see if the transmission fluid was full? Yes, it should be the nastiest smelling brown fluid ever. How many miles are on the transmission? You may want to consider flusing the transmission to see if that improves things. As far as which gear oil to use, people suggest Redline MTL-90 (quite hard to find it seems, but can be ordered from myoilshop.com) or GM Syncromesh. Regular gear oils have an additive that is harmful to the syncos in our transmission, so it is strongly suggested you get one of these, or one that advertises safety with (I believe it's called) yellow metal syncros.

the transmission isa 5 spd. on the side of it there is a little plug that you take off and if any fluid spils out or it is even witht the plug it is full. it has almost 198000 miles on it.

Alright, that works. And yeah, try a fluid flush on the transmission to see if that helps.
