I have an 89 240sx, The transmission will go into gear when the car is off, but not when the engine is running. When I push the clutch pedel down the slave cylinder pushes the shift fork in. The pedal still feels like it could be pushed more (Maybe a 1/4 of an inch). I'm just curious where my problem is, is my clutch shot? Thanks in advance for the help.

You may need to adjust the petal or possibly your clutch master could be going out.

i would bleed the system. i reccomend you remove the damper box by the slave cyl if you have not already. it has no useful function at all.

I bled the system again, no change. If the master cylinder was bad would it still be pushing the shift fork?

hmmm, it really sounds like something is not disengaging the clutch. i doubt it would be the clutch itself. try peeling back teh boot around the clutch fork and looking inside the trans. see anything not right? is the clutch fork real easy to move around?

I Checked it out everything seems to be fine, the clutch fork does not move around at all when I try to push on it. (It does move when I push the pedel.)

having exhausted all other possibilities you need to drop the trans and have a look.

You said it doesnt want to go into gear when the motor is runnin...try this...you can obviously get the car started right...I assume in nuetral...well put it in gear...preferably first ..with the ebrake on good .. and try to start it... if the clutch is being engaged all should be fine...if not it should either not start...or start and want to buck forward .. I had this prob with a sentra and it was the pressure plate worn out.. the fork and bearings were all good but the fingers were worn out causing the disc to keep a little pressure...

hope this helps a little...

Wish I had read this before I started to remove the transmission. Thanks anyway though. I've got he transmission unbolted, wires all disconnected drive shaft off, and mount unbolted, but I can't for the life of me get the transmission to separate from the engine.

ok, I'v got the transmission out. The throw out bearing felt like it was getting stuck when it would go back towrds teh transmission. Could that have been my problem? Doesn't really make sense to me why that would cause it to not go into gear. Also, I don't know if the shift fork was connected to the throwout bearing because I accidentally pulled it off as I was pulling the transmission out from under the car. That could have been the problem too. Anyway, just curious what you think about it. I'm going to replace the throwout bearing and sleave.
