A decision like this is partially practical and partially emotional. The emotional part is simply the attachment. The practical part is that fact that you know how the car was maintained for the last 70-80k, which may or may not (depending on how well or poorly your maintenance was) sway you from buying another used Q45.
I suspect you need chain guides done - $1600.I suspect you need a new transmission - $2800.Total: $4600.
Used Q45 of the same model year: $4000, but you will STILL have to add $100 for a transmission cooler, more for a transmission pan drop and flush, more for hoses and any other small but essential items that must be replaced, suspension repairs, Bose audio repairs, etc. Then add $1600 for chain guides.
I think when you play around with the numbers, it makes practical sense to fix this Q. Be sure to search the forum for info on how to extend transmission life: regular fluid change, transmission pan drop, external transmission cooler, staying in 3rd gear in the city...
I've got a 92 Q at 178k, currently on its second transmission (original replaced at 50k under warranty). Engine is strong, transmission fluid is clean and fresh. Last owners have taken excellent care of this vehicle (a pilot and an engineering/science teacher).
