OKay,

I bought a KA24DE (motor + transmission) off this guy who did an SR swap with his 91 240. He said that there was about 180,000 km's on the engine. So this weekend I went ahead with the swap and everything went fine until we tried to tighten the crank pulley. It was turning even when the car was in 5th. Also, I can only have the car in the neutral position and go over to the right and into 4th and 5th. No 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th and it won't even go to the left, just center and 4th and 5th. We've hit a dead end and are hoping that it's not a broken shaft in the transmission. The shifter is a B&M and I took out the stick only to put transmission fluid in. It's a bit of a ***** to get back in but it eventually fit in. I also replaced the clutch. What I'm thinking now is that it could possibly be the clutch slave or maybe the throwout bearing isn't working properly. Not too sure. Can someone help? I miss my baby!

the clutch or throwout bering woudnt keep it from going into gear, as for tightening the pulley, stick it in any gear you can and pull the parking brake, then go ahead and torque the bolt down to spec (its pretty high)

clutch slip can cause the engine to turn over when doing that. you can put a breaker bar on it and whack the breaker bar with a hammer. that is standard procedure in my shop with no issues. of course i wish we had a flywheel stopper.

as for your trans it must be internal. pull the shifter back out and make sure everything looks kosher. if it looks normal then the 1/2 shift rod may be stuck.

Thanks for the input guys. We took another look at it today and came up with something bizarre. when in what we think is neutral, the rear tire can be turned by hand but with more resitance than ususal. I then put the car into 5th and cranked the engine again. no movement at all. The rear tires didn't budge. I'm not sure idf this is typical or not. I think I'll be reluctantly pulling the transmission tomorrow. Also...what is the 1/2 shift rod?

230 may be enough. i dont know why but you can torque it to 100 some and it will take considerably more to pull it off. dunno. a 27mm socket will also fit it. if nothing else do it ghetto(for removal).breaker bar and socket on boltwedge breaker bar against something hard like the ground or somethingbump motor with starter-pop- bolt looseworks good on nissans and other clockwise rotating enginesno worky on hondas and some mitsus
