well, lately my 1993 240sx coupe with 190k has been going a lil nutts on me.... this has been happening for probably 2-3 weeks now... everytime i press in my clutch theres this loud screeching noice and gets even louder as i'm going into first... usually happens when i first start up the car... sometimes it just happens when i'm stopped at a red light. i'm not quite sure if its the transmission or the clutch so any info would be great thanks!

i have a video that i recorded with my digital camera... on the first time i stepped on the clutch it didnt make the sound... but on the other 3 times it did.. it's sorta hard to hear so turn your sound up if its necessary. thanks

sounds like a bad TO bearing, because it makes the sound when you push it in

man, that video made it much easier to say that

yup, throwout bearing is only loaded when clutch pedal is pressed down. thats why it tends to make noise only when clutch is down. my car has the opposite problem. the pilot bushing is loaded when clutch is not pressed. those are two common things. i guess it could be something else.

is the clutch and stuff like the TO bearing old?

so if the pilot bushing is loaded, it would make the sound when the clutch is out? mine kinda makes a "spinning" sound when its in neutral and the clutch is out, but goes away as soon as i push the clutch in

if you need to, feel free to break this off into another thread or shoot me an email

yeah, 99% of the time that is a pilot bushing. thats the bushing that the trans input shaft goes into inside the crankshaft. little piece of sintered bronze that costs liike nothing. i just let mine whine. will fix next time trans is off.

to change the bearing, you have to remove the transmission, thats the hardest part of it all.

Yup, throwout bearing.

Just change the whole clutch when you do it.

240kid: if the clutch is up and you hear a whirring sound then it is the input bearing. as the bearing wears it will get noisier, but that does not mean it will fail.

pilot bushing and throwout bushing are only stressed when the clutch pedal is to the floor. The pilot bushing has the job of keeping the end of the input shaft secure and steady at all times. If the clutch pedal is not being pressed then the input shaft and crank are turning at the same speed, so it could not cause noise then.

So why is it the input bearing? because when the clutch is pressed all the way in that is the only time the input shaft can stop spinning.

but if the throwout bearing and input bearing are both bad? time for a vg30dett swap.
