i was involved in an accident a few nights ago and i was rear-ended..and as soon as i got hit..i tired to put the car in park..but the shifter wouldnt move back from the tip-tronic mode..even though the car was in the drive gear..it wouldnt go any where so a friend and i had to push the car off of the road..and usually the gauges tell you what gear your in and if your in tip-tronic it'll tell you what gear you're in..well that screen was blank...the shifter was still shifted to the tip-tronic mode..and it wouldnt budge...and i was just curious as to what happened and is it expensive to fix..and if there is a quick solution if it happens again...my insurance isnt paying for it since it was the other lady's fault..but i still would like to know what the hell happened....the tow truck guy tried to use the shift lock thing but that didnt work either...he read the manual and said that the transmission went into "fail safe mode"...and the key wouldnt come out of the ignition...it would get locked in at the ACC mode..so you couldnt even take the key out...if anyone can explain what happened..it'd be nice to get the knowledge of what happened...and remember this happened as soon as the lady hit the back of my car...

That's some crappy luck. Sorry to hear about that. I have seen several of these happen when there is a significant shock to the body like getting hit the shift mechanism will get stuck in manual mode. You can remove the console and take out the 4-10mm bolts and you may be able to get it to move to park once you take the bolts out and move it around a little. It may require replacement and this may only be a temporary patch but it should at least let you get the key out.
