bingo, he is right on the money. if you go to parts store and ask for gl-4 they will hand you some gl-5 and say it fulfills the requirements for gl-4. it does; they are right. however, gl-5 oils have an extreme pressure additive that eats up nissan synchros. mobil-one gear oil has caused a million busted manual transmissions. my favorite gl-4 is redline mt-90 because it is relatively cheap. nissan manual transmission fluid is good but it costs like $14.00/quart.

yup, i acually have gl-5 in mine right now, i wasnt paying attention when i bought it

im gona get some redline soon though, its the only "safe" synthetic oil for trannys. friction is the enemy, but the thing is, that synchros will not function right without some friction so thats why i say non synthetic is better, but redline puts frictional modifiers in there stuff to make sure it allows proper opperation of the sinchros. sinthetic in the diff though is always good.

Try Motul's Motylgear gear oil. It feels better than the MT90 I was using for a while.

When using gl-4 90 is it safe to use some HDL additive for easing speed changes?I have notice it becomes hard when cold.

i am not fammiliar with HDL additive, but its usually best to stay away from ALL additives with very few exeptions, in this case i would say play it safe and dont.

speaking of busted manuals, i heard that nissan isnt servicing the 6 speed manuals in the spec and z which have tested positive as to having synthetic installed

yeah, nissan motorsport says motul is the best but it is high dollar stuff. if i had no issue with dollars i would go motul.

hdl-who makes it? if it is made by a reputable company it may be ok.

i have seen a few 6speeds go out at the dealership and we just replace with new ones. however, my dealership is on an exchange program so we do that with 5speeds and automatics too usually. i would hope that nissans manual transmission fluid is synthetic as expensive as it is.

I changed my transmission fluid with MT-90... wow what a difference it makes.

My transmission fluid was only few weeks old but it was some regular gl-5 stuff and it was still crappy. However after draining out the fluid and chaning it with MT-90, it felt like I got a new shifter. Shift was soo smooth and I havent grinded my 2nd gear since..

I recommend MT-90
