transmission oil - Mobile, Redline, Amsoil?I'm looking to put some high quality fresh oil in the transmission. I've found plenty of discussion and comparasion on motor oil, but very little on transmission oil. The top 3 contenders are Mobile 1, Redline, and Amsoil. I believe the Mobile 1 and Amsoil oils are 75w140 where as Redline is also avaliable in 75w250. I'd like to make a informed decision, can anyone help with info regarding the merits of these products. Thank you!

Friend w/ 400hp Z uses Redline, he thinks it works great.

GM makes this synchro-mesh stuff that I heard works good.

and I also like to post in CAPS!, even though the mods don't like it

GOOD TOPIC BECAUSE MY BOSS IS HAVING ALOT OF TROUBLE WITH HIS transmission.. HE HAS A STREETABLE 400+ 300ZX TT.. AND HIS PROBLEM IS WITH THE transmission AND HE'S USED ALL THOSE TYPES OF FLUIDS AND THE ONE THATS WORKED THE BEST IS THE REDLINE.. ALSO THEY SELL THIS STUFF CALLED SYCHRO-MESH THAT THEY USE FOR THE GM DEALERSHIPS.. ITS WHAT THEY USE ON THE TRACKS FOR ALL THE GM CARS.. HE SAYS THAT ITS REAL GOOD SH1T.. BUT HE ALSO FOUND THIS SPECIALITY SHOP THAT SELLS ANOTHER BRAND OF OIL BUT HE NOW CANNOT REMEMBER WUTS ITS CALLED.. BUT ITS SUPPOSED TO WITHSTAND ALOT OF HP ON TRANNYS BUT COSTS LIKE 50SOMETHING BUCKS A BOTTLE.. BUT I WOULD RECOMMEND TRYING OUT THAT SYNCHO-MESH FIRST..JOE

Redline Shock Proof

It's what keeps 3rd gear intact on a modded Skyline

when you get gear oil for your transmission, make sure you get a oil that's GL-4 or below. GL-5 and higher oils will eat your synchronizers.

if you choose redline, you'll have to choose between MTL (75W80) or MT-90 (75W90). i use MT-90 in my car and i have noticed my notchy shifting when cold to have gone away.

Hachi ... Nissan transmissions use GL-5. It's recommended from Nissan and is what comes in the car stock.

Redline MTL or MT-90 work great for every application.

works good....I like it a lot. my transmission had suffered dammage before I got my car though, so I will have to replace/rebuild it sometime anyway, but the gear oil change seemed to help it out a bit. Given how hard I am on the transmission and such, I like the added insurance.-chet

From what i understand, redline is not good for the synchro in the 240, i used redline and my 3rd gear started to grind to hell, so i switched back to valvaline. When i drained the redline out, it was like glitter in the gear oil... my poor poor transmission!!!   but on thing that's good about redline i must say is that it's really thin yet provides great lubrication just not for synchro...

which redline oil did you use? if you used any gear oil other than their MTL or MT-90, then you were using a GL-5 oil. GL-5 oil has something (i don't remember which) that eats the synchros because it reacts with brass.

MTL is a 70W80 and MT-90 is a 75W90 and they're marketed for transmissions.

i'm using redline's mt-90 right now, but i really can't say much about its performance while driving. i noticed some smoother shifting for a while, but i think it might just be a placebo effect of changing the gear oil...

maybe i need to drive with some other brand transmission oil to be able get a feel for it myself. i've had the oil in for over a year and my synchros still seem to be fine.

I'm running Motul in mine (pdm-racing.com) and I love it. It's thinner than stock fluid I believe and definitely thinner than alot of the thicker oils people like to put in.. but it helps decrease gear grinding significantly (won't help if you just plain misshift) and it feels more direct but you can tell that its doing its job properly.

MY experinces in Amsoil...

it was the MT-90, but since you are fine with it, maybe i just can't drive... :pface

when i was reading skyline driven's post i thought wouldn't it be a great experiment to see which one works best by just misshifting on purpose. lol i mean i can see the commercial just have a row of cars and you see ppl just jamming the gears in. RRRRNNNKKKK!! RRRRRNNNKKK!!! you know like they have those infommercials with cars that "run with no oil for 10,000 miles" Yeah i found that funny. cuz you all know you done it to, especially in third gear. i hate it! how often should you change trans oil? diff oil?thanks
