I'VE SEARCHED ALL DAY! here's the problem. I noticed a good amount of transmission oil leaking from my car, and the first thing I did was assume that it was the rear transmission seal because I know these tend to go out. I lift the car and to my surprise there isnt that much or any oil at all leaking between the driveshaft and the transmission. Turns out the leak is coming from somewhere around the shifter drips down then accumulates around the drain plug. Everything seems tight, the rubber boot that sits right on top of the transmission is cool, and the drain plug is nowhere close to loose. I know my car is low on transmission oil because now Im getting this weird grinding noise at around 2500-3000 rpm which is definitely metal. I need to know what other seals maybe up front, or any suggestions on how to address this problem.

Are you sure is not coming from the sensors??? Those tend to leak every now and then, easy fix, drain transmission, take out sensors, clean areas, apply sealant (teflon paste or tape), put together, fill transmission. You will never have a leak at the drain plug. The rear seal is very strong, I took the shaft out one time for clutch removal and put it back with the same seal and never leak....

the sensors are probably the leak, however the noise you have is probably the bearings and probably not related to the fluid level. these trannies are very bad about having the bearings go out and the only fix is replace the trans or pay about $1k to have yours rebuilt. Im on my 3rd used trans now and looking for my 4th as I dont have a grand to spend to get it fixed right............

k sorry it took a while to get back to you guys. i resealed all the sensors, and even the boot. drove the car around for about 5 minutes, went back to check on the leak and it is still F**king dripping! now I have to lift the car again and from where. i thought it was the boot because thats where i saw the most oil acuumulating. I guess thats not where its from. the oil seems like its coming from that area...towards the rear of the transmission. I'll check on the rear transmission seal again but I dont think thats it because I didnt see any visable gear oil around that area. Anyways let guys know what you think.

well you may find that the leak is coming from the sensors anyways, putting sealer on something like that usually doesnt yield very good results the best thing to do is completely spray down the trans with cleaner and get it dry then drive it a while and then you may be able to see the origin of the leak. if it is the boot or sensors the only way to properly fix them is replace them unfortunately but anyhow let us know what you find....

I just found this forum and I just Bought A 1993 240SX and im having the same problem. The oil is coming up through the shifter bushing. It Goes through about a quart a week. Every thing else is bone dry. The transmission also make's a slight noise when the car is moving (in gear or not ). Or when its parked with the clutch engaged. and engine running. If any body has any ideas to help us it would be great
