When I have the clutch fully depressed and the engine is revving while it is in gear (like when you first start the car or if you just put it in gear and step on the clutch and give it a rev) it makes a rubbing/humming noise. It has some fair volume to it. Kinda loud but is not deafening.

What is causing this noise? It can begin as low as 1500 RPM. I don't normally rev the engine like that anyways, but I noticed it always did it when I started the car and the noise went away when I let off the clutch either in gear or in neutral. Today I tried to see if it would do it if I just put it in gear and revved while at a stoplight. It made the same kind of noise. I can't even really describe it except its a mixture of loud rubbing and humminga t the same time. Please help cuz it doesnt seem like its good. It has done this ever since the SR swap was put in several months ago but I never really let it bother me until now.

I thought it was just cuz when the transmission is cold it does that but today it was VERY warm (had been driven for about 20 minutes) and it did it.

Hmm weird. Well yea the transmission shifts OK I guess... but if I were to ever want to launch the car I wouldn't be able to do that cuz of this noise. Plus I dunno.. some noises can be tolerated but I just don't want to wear something out.

input shaft bearing, mine did the same stuff a while back, then it decided to take a crap while I was drifting. It will eventually get worse and worse and get to the point where the car will try to move when you have the clutch in and it is in gear, and it will get STUPID loud. Then it will blow up...

If you want a cheap fix, go to a junkyard and pick up a KA transmission, then swap the bellhousings and then put it back in. The gears are a little shorter, so it makes your car a bit slower on the top end, but you gain crazy amounts of low end sprinting ability...

Dang... well whats the expensive fix? Is this bearing a replaceable part?

yeah the bearing is a replaceable part, but I didn't know which one to buy and to have the transmission rebuilt was gonna be like $400 when I could get a good junkyard transmission for $100

I think I made the right choice cuz the gearing is perfect. I always thought the stock SR gears were a tad too tall.

Yes you did make a good choice... Driving his car almost feel like it has 4.36 final gear :)

I thought the gearing was identical. Didn't know it was actually better to use the KA transmission. I also kinda felt the gearing was too tall. Thanks for the advice, I do have a friend with an extra KA transmission that I can get.

I have some pics on my computer detailing the whole swap and comparing the internals of the transmission if you want them.

Some things that we noticed were that the KA gears were significantly smaller in diameter compared to the SR gears, also the SR used huge aluminum shift forks, but the KA used small steel forks. Furthermore, the SR used sealed bearings and the KA used normal unsealed bearings.

So far I have been beating the piss out of it for the past 9 months with no problems whatsoever...
