if your gonna have to pay it out of pocket, id almost say look for a newer trans. i got a dealership warrenty on my 03' & had them replace the syncros right after i bought it. bout a year (& 13Kmiles) since, & 3rds already starting to go again.
sure someone on here can advise as to whether or not a swap to a newer gearbox is technically / fiscally feasible, but id think any trans work would be high to begin with

To say that the transmission is weak is false advertising. The gears are thick and comparable to GETRAG. Means very very STRONG!! Just has a few weak links that needs to me massaged, (synchros)
