transmission leak

I have a 02 QX4 4x4 and I was on a road trip last week when I noticed white smoke behind me. I stopped at the next reststop to see transmission fluid leaking, and it wasn't just a little. I was only ten miles to the next town so I checked my fluids and it was still pretty full. I got to the town and the leaking had slowed down but I was still pretty full on my transmission fluid. I decided to top it off with a half a quart and get to my destination. It started to leak again pretty bad but then slowed downed. This was last week and my wife drives it about five miles a day and I check the transmission every day after work. The leaking has stopped but we see a drop now and then but nothing extreme. Anyone have a clue what leaked and should i be in a rush to get this fixed or can i hold off a month for money to come in.

Only way to tell is to get it on a lift and inspect it. I would not gamble on a $3000 transmission-
