My transmission started to leak after i installed an aftermarket short shifter. I could smell gear oil under the car and the transmission didnt feel as smooth.

(btw i cheated on the install by not dropping the transmission)

I thought the leak was coming from the shifter seal, so I installed a new seal along with the stock shifter assembly. I changed the gear oil, thinking this would solve the problem, but NO. Its still leaking with the more symptoms. Now its grinds when i shift into 3rd.

I suspect the seal to be out of position, or the 6 bolts on the shifter are not evenly torqued, or its leaking from a different source.

All the help would be appreciated, thanks.

You need to pin point where it is actually leaking from. Also you don't have to drop the transmission to install and shifter. A grind is typically a sign of syncro wear.

Clean up the area really well and see where the leak is coming from.

Did you replace the boots during install?

Also the manual transmission is quite picky on the fluid.

They commonly leak from the drain plug (debris in threads). Mine does leave a few spots on the ground, I just top it off every oil change.

i noticed my drain plug was glazed with oil after the transmission oil change. Can't i just clean out the threads of the drain plug?

I have actual smoke coming up through the shift boot! It has been happening for the past three weeks and I can smell a faint smell from the smoke. The smoke is hard to see and the longer I run the car, the more smell I get. I guess it is time to fill my transmission up.

your leak is coming from the shifter. the smoke is from the oil dripping on the exhaust pipe. did you use silicone RTV seal?

I used High-Temp RTV silicon on the shifter. I tightened the 6 12mm bolts as best as i could. 4 of them from the top and the 2 front ones from beneath the car. I think my gasket shifted out of place.

But the gear oil isnt dripping or leaving puddles, its just smeared on the bottom of the transmission and drive shaft coupler.
