Hi,

I have a 93 J30 with 89K miles on it, bought it at 80K, do not know when the transmission was flushed. For the past week while slowing down, when the car is downshifting from 2nd to 1st, it is jerking violently regardless if the car is hot or cold. What do you guys think could be the problem ? I am taking it to a mechanic to do a flush and am hoping that this will fix it. Do I do a pan drop immediately after the flush or wait a few days ?

Regards,Azza

Doesn't matter which order you get it in. You need a new filter and fluid most likely now. My J will jerk slightly sometimes at certain low rpms from second to first. Your problem doesn't sound too healthy, though.

Do like I did, have the fluid "exchanged", exchanged being the operative word, with Mobile 1 Synthetic. You will need about 13L, then do a pan drop and filter replacement, another 5L.

Make sure you check the fluid level after driving for about 5 min. then check fluid while engine is idling on HOT side of dip stick.

I had a big problem. When I took my car in for a flush on Saturday, we noticed a big leak and it was the coolant. According to my mechanic, the transmission fluid had leaked into my coolant and hence the overflow. I had to replace the radiator, hoses, do a transmission flush, do a transmission pan drop, replace the transmission filter and do a transmission flush again and a coolant flush. Cost me 1300$. Now I have to get the engine steam cleaned. Do you guys think all this could have happened or is my mechanic taking me for a ride.

I dont think its possible for the transmission fluid to leak into the coolant.

But, in a 93 all of the work you mentioned was liekly neccessary, just to keep stuff working right.

Fred..:)

If the fluids are crosscontaminated, it would be easy to tell. The only way it could happen is if the OEM heat exchanger had been perforated. Hate to think what the consequences are for the transmission.

Might have added an external transmission cooler while you were at it.
