Well, my transmission has been a little weird lately. First, it started leaking a little and burning it after long freeway drives (gotta love that smell) and now when I shift from first gear into second or from second into third, it makes a whinning noise...

Any ideas? Is the transmission dying??

Check transmission fluid. May be low on it if it was leaking.

I run Redline MT-90.... love that schtuff.

Well, the transmission WAS low, but the problem persists now. It's more like this...in ANY gear if I leave it in gear and put the clutch in, it makes a whinning/rasping sounds, which I think means that I killed the transmission's bearings...

So, I'm thinking about swapping it out. I've heard CA18ET transmission works, but is it gonna be as weak as the CA18DET one? Would a KA gearbox work w/o modification in the CA bell housing?

Does it make the whining sound when you let out the clutch in Neutral?

And I am interested in the answer to your last question as well.

BTW, how weak are the CA18DET trannies considered to be? They OK for 250 - 300 HP? I am sure this is somewhere else, but so far my searches on here have been very unproductive.

Trannies can take a good thrashing and can handle better than 400hp. It all depends on how neglected and/or mistreated the transmission was before it arrived here on U.S. soil.

Might have killed the throw out bearing too.

What you can do is get an SR or KA transmission and just swap the housings for the CA.

I'm having transmission issues also. Mine is more of a rattle whenever the imput shaft of the transmission is turning. (ie when the clutch is released). I'm hoping it's not a bad bearing, but I'm real sure it is. Grrrr...

I think the only thing that is bad is the bearings in your brain housing group which causes you to be an unsolicited post whore which is what you really want to be in life which is probably why your transmission rattles and because of you, i'm becoming a post-whore too:( (so sad) My mom warned me about others rubbing off on me:help

The CA 'box has weak mainshaft bearings, also the thrust washers don't last, these problems can make a whine, rumble or a squeeking noise that tends to dissapear when the clutch is pressed down (the mainshaft stops turning) its best to fit new bearings before they fail and chew up the whole box, when I was mapping a friends s13 his gearbox didn't sound too healthy and near the end of the mapping session the thing blew up and sprayed EP80 all over the road and made quite a hole in the front casing.

Dee-I wish you were the only one I was influencing, but I also effect others in my everyday life. I'm a whore where ever I go. I mean...sunofa!

Paul-Thanks for the warning. It doesn't sound real bad yet, so I'll have to let it go till I get some money after the first of the year. Are the bearing pressed in, or is it something I can do with a big "C" clamp?
