I've recently started to hear a slight grinding noise coming from the transmission. Usually I hear it when I first put my Z into drive or reverse. I have had this happen to me once before on a previous Z, and I'm thinking that sooner or later the transmission is going to die out on me. Do you guys agree? So im thinking im just going to go out and get a JDM unit to replace it before anything gets worse. What do you guys think?

I take it that its an automatic since you said reverse and drive.

Have you changed the fluid or filter? Have you checked your fluid level? If you did change the fluid, was there any debris in the transmission pan? Chances are that a good fluid like Redline Synthetic and some maintence will solve little problems.

Yeah, its an automatic. Fluid level is where it needs to be, and I recently changed the fluid and didnt see any debris in the transmission pan. Now as far as the type transmission fluid I'm using, its not one of the reputable brands, so I'll try and switch up to a better brand and see how that works.

Also, I just came across another Z32 (NA) for $1000 that just needs an auto transmission. I've got access to a TT auto transmission and was wondering if it would be compatible with the NA. Would anything need to be changed to allow for this conversion to work. Thanks for the welcome.

Cool, give it a shot with some good fluid and see what happens. Might also want to look into getting the transmission flushed with a machine as opposed to just draining and refilling as that still leaves a lot of the old fluid in there.

As for the adaptability of the NA and TT transmissions, the bellhousing on the TT trans is a little different. I believe there is also info on here as to what needs to be done to adapt NA to TT and vice versa

I've now had 4 Q45's and three 300zx twinturbo's .. and the result is the same..Add a transmission cooler ! Change fluid with Mobile 1 ATF.. That's a complete flush not just draining the pan... The results are usually noticable along with increasing the life of your trans...

what if you have a manual trans and it grinds some times when first going into reverse? also is it common for z's to have grinding while switching into 4th?

grinding into reverse usually a sign of an aging clutch, but 4th gear as well!? I'd suspect syncro's
