ok....ill try to keep this brief. my gf has a 1986 300ZX . 154K original. She recently had the top end done on the car (cylinder heads and all components)strangely enough the car was in the shop for almost a year. These guys were real winners. Anyway when we went to pick the car up it didn't want to grab in first gear. My first thought was the vacuum modulator was faulty and to verify that i checked the vacuum line at the modulator and there was fluid in it which I determined was a ruptured diaphragm in the modulator. so I replaced it. after that it still did the same thing it would slip in first gear. When we dropped the car off it never had any transmission problems ever. After 2nd gear it shifts fine. I disconnected the modulator and plugged the line and it would go into first fine. I know that there is a pin in there and when I changed the modulator I saw the pin but I didn't bother pulling it out to see if it was broken. It has a good vacuum source and I am trying to determine what might be going on here or looking for someone who may have had similar issues. Thanks for any help. Primosoup

Nobody has verified fluid at proper level yet............and does that trans have any like band adjustments or the like? Could be that the issue was about to happen and new found power made it show up.

mac, there's a mechanics saying - "a car driven only one day of the week for a hundred miles, will last for ever".
TIME .TIME.TIME.No "excercise" can be bad for car ,like for people. I got a car not driven , hardly for two years(head gaskets) the trans just doesn't act the same. Dozens of fluid circuits, some accumulators , check-balls,clutches,seals,o-rings,rubber diaphram like in the modulator etc. Mine made a weird noise running in 1st - had to "run it out" to sound just a little better. Just going through the shift positions I probably "loosened" some varnish? I realize I'm not coming up with a "definitive answer" but your shops taking a year will be hard pressed to easily find out if they actually caused Neglectful , or abusive / intentional "beating" the car? Without like a tear-down , you know "post-mortem" exam of trans componants , this isn't Princess Diana's Limo we're investigating :rotflmao So something like that external modulator replaced , pan drop/trans fluid & filter change is like otta be tried first .
