My friend has a 95 or 96 max AT. he said that when he puts the car in drive, it takes a few seconds before the transmission engages into gear. if works fine once its engaged through all the forward gears, and the reverse gear engages normally as well. there is no slipping when its under load shifting gears, or in gear. only when he puts the car in D from park or reverse

is it only when cold or all the time? check your fluid level with the engine and trans at operating temp. should be at the bottom of the hash marks at the very least(when it is fully warmed up)

this is just whenever he puts the car into drive. doesnt matter if he just started the car after sitting over night, or when he puts it in gear after going to the gas station. and he said that when he had the fluid changed a few months back, the tech found metal shavings in the pan, so we think that it might be the forward clutches going bad

you would have slipping involved if it were clutches. since there are no other adverse conditions other then intial delayed shift I am thinking its control components[solonoid pack] there was a tsb on shift solonoids for the max not sure if it was for that model year or not though.

98 I-30t, 58kmiles. Had the exact same issue for over a year. Infiniti shop (Birmingham, AL, Crown Infinity) couldn't find a problem (transmission parameters were within specs). Transmission fluid is good (original, no smell, right level, etc.). Sometimes the hesitation can last up to 5 seconds, summer, winter, rain, shine, overnight, or parked at work. If engine RPM is raised, transmission engagement occurs with a lurch (ouch! - I learned the first time to wait). Doesn't seem to affect shifting in other gears or anytime while driving. I'm contemplating a transmission filter raplacement and a fluid flush but that's because I don't have any other ideas. I wonder how common this affliction is?
