Well I just got my car w/ sr20 but it looks like there is a problem with the transmission. The first thing I noticed is there is a lot of slop in the shifter and the shifting is very notchy. Is this a normal amount of notchyness? The car has a short-shifter installed, could this be part of the problem? Well on to my second problem. When I took the dash trim apart to examine the shifter I noticed there was oil around it. After getting under the car it looks like a seal is leaking around where the driveshaft connects to the transmission. Also, after I have been driving for about a half an hour if I feel the metal part of the shifter it is hot. Could the leaky seal have lost so much oil that my transmission is a little hard to shift and overheating? Would adding oil help in the short term and should I look into getting the seal replaced or just get a new transmission for ~$300?

One final thing, my right headlight only works on highbeam. Where should I look to try and fix the problem?

Eric (Working hard to get my car inspected)

What kind of shifter do you have, that could have something to do with it, but your problem sounds much more serious than that. What kind of transmission oil do you have in there? Man it sounds like your transmission is another victim of of drift abuse. If its broke you could always use your ka transmission. But i would lok more into it befor you do anything.

i had a similar problem. was caused by OVER filled oil. higher pressure made it leak out the driveshaft seal

when a transmission gets hot it is usually because the gears are not meshing together properly. This is a bad thing, drain your transmission fluid and check for metal shavings.

The shifter is a Pilot Motorsports short-shifter. I guess I will first check the level of the transmission fluid then just drain it and refill and hope that takes care of the problem. Also, I dont have any stock parts i.e. KA transmission because I bought the car with the sr installed by Heavy Throttle.

Oh, about the headlight. Try and switch bulbs, if it doesn't work then, maybe you put too much pressure on the parts that connects the bulb to the wiring, just loosen it a little bit and see if it works. Hope this helps.

I think I found the headlight problem. I was searching the internet and found a review of a 92 240sx vert, which is exactly what I have, and he had headlight problems too. One of his headlights would come on for no reason and then the low-beam on one stoped working. He took it to a dealer because no one could find the problem and they installed a $72 headlight relay+ labor. I think I will go to a dealer and get the number off the relay because I think I found them online for $14. Hopefully this will solve my problem.

well I tried to dran my fluid and I couldnt get either the drain plug or the filler plug to move. The filler plug had been put in with grease on the threads becauseI could see the excess, but it still wouldnt move. I think I am going to take it to my friends work and try it there. I will be able to put it on a lift at a Lexus dealership, use their tools, and get more leverage. Hopefully, this will work. I will tell you guys what I find hopefully monday night, hopefully I can do it then.

It may be wise to get a magnetic drain plug

They come stock with a magnetic drain plug. If you bought the car from HT then I would call Jeff and ask questions. I wouldn't think that HT does shoddy work because I have seen a couple of their swaps that were amazingly clean.

As for the shifter the stock rubber boot that goes on the stock shifter doesn't tranfer over to the aftermarket ss so that could explain the excess fluid. Remember that this was a transmission swap also for the vert. so there will be no clutch dampner.

Worse case scenario is you have to buy another SR transmission from HT which they sell for $250

cliffsnotes:d00d just call Jeff and give symptoms and see what he says

nrcooler- I agree that I should call HT. I think I will do that after I get the car on the lift and clean oil from the chassis. That way I can see if the rear seal is leaking. I also do have some sort of rubber boot on the shifter. It has 4 screws that bolt it down, I assume this is the stock one. Also, I am comming from old vw with cable clutches so I am unfamiliar with what a clutch dampener is. Finally, if worse comes to worse I will buy a new motorset I think for what $1200 or so, that way I have a new transmission and an engine to build up internally and swap when mine blows.

Well nothing from HT yet but I did fix the headlight problem today. Thanks to zilvia.net I downloaded the service manuals for my car and traced the problem to the headlight switch itself. I took it apart and it started working so it was just a loose connection.

True. Luckily I didnt even have to buy anything, I just took apart the switch and smacked it around untill it worked.
