Hey guys/gals,

The other day I noticed that when I shift into 2nd gear, there's a bit of grinding. Nothing loud or crazy, but it's enough to be noticeable. It tends to happen only when the car is cold, so after the car warms up, it goes away.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
-Alex-

Replace transmission fluid with redline fluid

Mine does that the first time I shift into second when the transmission is cold. I switched to Redline fluid and it might have helped but the problem is still there. You will learn over time to "ease" into second to minimize the grind-ey-ness lol

Mine has worked fine like that since I bought it in Feb.

PS - it is a good idea to try Redline MT-90...that fixes grinds for a lot of people. Also make sure your fluid is full before jumping the gun...this could be the result of just being low on fluid.

Great, thanks for the suggestions guys.

Unfortunately, I've noticed something else. When the car is idling, there's a slight whirring sound, but it disappears as soon as I press in the clutch.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

It's your throwout bearing. Mine makes a slight whir and it's got 800 miles on it. I wouldn't be concerned unless it gets loud

Oh ok. I didn't know if this was normal or if I should be worried. This is my first Z, so I'm not used to the little quirks that come with certain cars. :)

Thanks,

Yeah when my car is cold and its cold outside it will barely go into 2nd gear without warming up first.

lol, nissan really messed the trans. in this car, my 2nd doesn't quite grind, but the shift definitely isn't as smooth as it used to be when i bought the car :p
its too appealing to hit 2nd hard, unfortunately....

Mine is fine when it warms up a little.
