Had the transmission flushed (with filter replacement) and brake fluid replaced on the J30 today.

transmission is shifting smooth but when I got home, I checked the transmission fluid and it looks like it may have been overfilled a bit.

The fluid is past the dipstick cold mark by about a half inch (the cold mark is highest than the hot mark). The fluid goes all the way to the hump on the dipstick.

Is there any danger by driving the car with that much fluid in there? The question is, how in the heck do I get the excess amount out of there if I need to do so?!

If I remember right...a lot of people have observed that the techs fill out more after the transmission flush. Also on one occassion, someone's transmission whine went away after he removed the extra oil.

Half an inch above mark is about a gallon extra? You can use an oil extractor (pump) to pull out the extra fluid.

yes its hi, and too much ATF can lead to problems.

However shops tend to error on the side of overfill, since they are sensitive to being blamed for shortchanging customers, but rarely get blamed for too much.

Fred...:)

An extra gallon say what ???? the pan on holds 3.5 quarts maybe an extra quart at most probably 1.25-1.5 extra pints!

You use a clear plastic gallon water jug and a funnel to drain from the pan drain plug [assuming you have one]....replacement transmission do and many oem pans.

Thanks for all the replies.

I used a pump to pump out the excess fluid (out of the dipstick tube) using a long thin hose. The transmission was overfilled by about 1 quart.

And while messing with ATF fluid, decided to replace the power steering fluid using the turkey-baster method. Emptied the reservoir, refilled, started engine, turned steering wheel for about a minute or two, shut engine off. Redo. Did that about 4 times before the fluid didn't have that nasty burnt smell to it.

Just like the other systems when the fluid smells burnt it and other things are. And any damage has occurred why they just get changed annually before the damage occurs! While they are at peak efficiency.
