Not unless you want food poisoning!

Check out the threads in Infiniti Mechanic. We get remanufactured Nissan ones from Joe. Or Level 10 custom builds.

I know some will choke at the thought, but a GOOD (note: Good is NEVER cheap) local shop can do a rebuild just as good as the Jatco remans that Nissan sells.

Whether or not your local shop is good can only be discovered by referrals and trial-and-error, however.

Tranny shop comes highly rated by my mechanic, and was also referred by a domestic only shop. no symptoms at all ,reverse went in 1 day. Bought the Q at 145000 had a flush and filter changed at that time, and do a drain and fill at every other oil change.

Amen, and might ask them how many Q45 transmissions they rebuild every month. That is where the crux lies. Nissan bench is set-up specifically for each model rebuild. Tolerances are as-new tight.

The JATCO/Nissan rebuild facility found that it was not cost effective to rebuild valve bodies in US because US drivers don't maintain transmissions [dirty].........therefore they exchange with a newish [remanned in Japan] valve body for EVERY remanned unit!

Impossible for domestic shops to do much with valve bodies since they cost over $1500 alone...........but then again if they are clean only springs and seals can go bad.

Ask your rebuilder [carry your voice stress analyser] what they will do with valve body?

We are really biased against Tranny Shop rebuilds, we have given a half dozen a chance to compete with Nissan at $1600.......they all failed to deliver a quality product. We define quality as not failing in 3 years.

Shop labor costs are just too high compared with a mass production factory that pays less for parts and less for labor...........a master rebuild kit [soft parts only] is ~~$350.........the rub comes if they need a hard part they must skip it because of price whereas the factory uses many cores just to get good hard parts.

We had many shops come back to us saying the bad tranny needs a $1000 planetary or other expensive hard part and they couldn't do it for the quoted price.

Also all Nissan/Jatco remans come with a newish rebuilt torque convertor instead of local just repainted unit unless you pay extra.

I keep reading threads like this about trannys dying, and they all have me worried.

The Q I just bought for the motor/tranny swap into my rx-7 has exactly 179k miles on it, and I keep on reading these posts and getting worried that I'm gonna swap this setup in and the tranny will **** out on me.It's going to be used in a high-performance environment (road racing, drag racing, performance oriented) but it will be in a super light 2700# car so stress levels won't be as much as they would be in a Q.

Was there any wierd behavior before your tranny decided to go out? Mine was a hair low on fluid when i drove it home, but it didn't act funny...

Most don't make it to 179K. I started this thread last year to get input about NICO owners' real-world experience with their transmissions:

zerothread?id=102300

You should set aside the three grand now. Mine's at 174K with no signs of failing yet. Fingers are crossed. Usually no symptoms before failing.

94-96 Trans religiously last longer due to the dual heat exchanger and filter right from the factory!

I believe if it makes it to 180k, it doesnt owe you anything... Assume most (id say over 70% of Q) trans dont see fluid change in the first 60k OR 4 years (whichever comes first)...

The Q trans lasts a LONG time if they are taken care of properly.

My Q had a $4k rebuild at a shop in California, which was 70k and 8 years ago. Still runs great.

The 1991 that i pulled my tranny out of has a little heat exchanger next to the tranny pan, then it went to a cooler in the bumper, then to a filter that looked like an oil filter, then back to the tranny..

since mine had the dual coolers and filter from the factory, should that ease my fears a little bit?

its not the same setup as the stock 94, with the twin RADIATOR coolers.

you didn't say radiator, you said heat exchanger.. which can be alot of things

So either way, the concensus is that the tranny will die soon no matter what?

No not really, it would have to depend on maintenance..... However, i wouldnt think it would go for another 30k without some sort of attention.

Oh, ok.I drained the fluid and dropped the pan, and the fluid was red with no sign of burning, and there wasn't any sludge in the pan.I was going to flush it, filter it, and synthetic aft it before i install it anyway. A friend @ a tranny shop in tulsa is going to recalibrate the valve body for some more line pressure during shifts to help prevent damage from the clutches from slipping (or so he said).

Just wondering if it was a lost cause to do that to a high mileage tranny and expect it to last a few k miles.
