Tranmission fluid

I found some transmission fluid in my garage and was wondering if 85w140 or 85w145 (one or the other) would work in S13 transmission. I know the manual recommends a different fluid but I really don't want to spend $10 on something that I already can use. Thanks a bunch.

Transmission fluid is special because it is designed to have a certain viscosity. Burnt or poor transmission fluid can both cause and be caused by transmission failure or degredation. I believe that this is more critical in an auto than a manual. But still, think of how much you are saving by putting the good stuff in. You dont want to have to replace the transmission earlier rather than later do you?
