I basically wanna do a bidget train horn setup. Ive gathered 2 huge pieces, The horns, and the tank. Ive got 2 horns 30 and 36" both use 1/4" compression fittings. And I also have a propane tank for the air storage.

I plan on hooking this up to a manual swing valve of sort so I can swing this sucker open n closed and talk with the horn lol

BUT I need a compressor. What compressor would you suggest?? Mind you Im only filling a propane tank but I dont know how fast or good these compressors fill or whatever.

I dont plan on using this horn ALOT, but having some fun with it would be nice, want something reliable. Something that can scare for a couple seconds at a time

Can anyone help me out on what I need and the best way to go about hooking it up??Appreciate it

Ill post all pics nessecary lol

Ugh.

As long as you're only planning on using it for emergencies.

Every car show I go to, there's some douche with a train horn blasting away who thinks he's cool.

but seriously, straight up, if you honk that in my presence, there's a good chance I'll consider practicing amateur dentistry.

we've put a few sets on the buses we build...can't stand them.

Pretty nice vid lol

Im looking for a compressor kit though, maybe one that comes with the pressure switch, safety switch and whatever else needed.

I basically need everything but the tank and horns....

Just ned to find a reliable compressor that can fill up the tank rather quick, but not turn this budget fun into something expensive

I've been there and done that, plan on doing it again soon

The first system I used was a 110v AC compressor, hooked up to a big power inverter. It worked good, but was loud as hell and I'm sure did some work on the alternator.

My second system, I went all out... train horns, powerful compressor, 3 gallon tank, 2-way horn switch.

The powerful compressor I'm talking about is your A/C compressor. If you have it and are willing to sacrifice your air conditioning, this is the way to go. An A/C compressor can kick out on average 7-10 CFM at 140ish psi. That's a lot of power. You don't even really need a tank.

Drain freon from A/C, and here's the layout of the system:

Air filter > tool oiler > A/C compressor inlet > water / oil separator > air tank > 12v air solenoid > train horns. Make SURE you have a safety release valve installed on the tank or the line after the compressor. The tool oiler replaces the freon, which seconds as a lubricant for your compressor, and the oil/water separator keeps any condensed air (water) from getting into your tank, solenoid and horns.

I'm not going to go into detail because there websites that already have the information available, just search "on board air" in google.

I plan on taking this system further with my jeep, not only having the horns but also NPT hookups on the front and rear bumper for air tool use or emergency fill-ups. I have never used A/C anyways, I'm a windows-open kind of guy, so it doesn't bother me.

And be responsible with the horns, mine are loud enough to hear 4+ miles away. We tested it. A sudden honk can cause panic on other drivers. The best use is college campuses with slooooow traffic and lotsa people on the sidewalk

I went through the stage of wanting to scare everybody and not thinking about the accidents it could cause or consequences, please don't be stupid with it. It's fun, but it could get back real quick. I rarely hit mine, only when its the perfect opportunity to scare the living daylights out of people I know, and that know I have the horns, but don't see it coming

Who needs train horns when you've got a V8 to snarl at pedestrians with? Two words: electric cutouts

Why not just scare everyone with M80s and flashbangs. Seems easier.

I looked at the 4x4 parts ones you linked and went thru there forums for reviews and people say they have an absurb failure rate. Especially when trying to fill a tank bigger than 1 gallon. They pumps they sell for under $200 are just to small

If you're going with an electric pump you won't find a good one for under 200 bucks. Go to hornblasters.com

Cheapest route is along the lines of what Crunkrich said. An AC compressor would do the job. You do run into some problems though. Agreeing with him, you do need an inline oiler to feed oil into the compressor to replace the POE or PAG oil you'd get naturally circulating in the AC system, and an inline oil remover to catch what's left over. A GM A6 compressor is pretty bulletproof, or you could run a York compressor, as those don't require all the extra oil plumbing.

Do a search for onboard air and you'll find some good tips. If you've got some fab skills, you can whip up a bracket for a York compressor, install one of those and plumb it to your tank with a low and high pressure switch wired to turn on and off the clutched pulley on the compressor. Same basic setup 4X4 guys use on trail rigs.
