I've been noticing a a little bit of sway in the rear of my 2000 Pathfinder lately. I did the shake test by grabbing the the lower and upper trailing arms and they didn't seem to move at all. I did notice that I can twist them about a 1/4 of an inch each way. How do I know if they need replacing? Would it be obvious if they were broken? Shocks and springs have been replaced recently.

I recently picked up a 99' QX4 and one of the problem was the rear upper/lower trailing arm replacement. This was easily identified because it would sway, as you said, left and right when going through uneven surfaces or bumps. It should be pretty easy to look through the bushing from the bottom of the car.

I have found the wiggle test to be insufficient....

1 way, if alone, is to have the finder in park and to try rolling the truck front
to back repeatedly, or have someone work the suspension, like jumping up and
down on the tow hitch while looking at the trailing arms...

I just changed mine... handles like new again!
