Trailer hitch on a Versa,

Has anyone done this before? I'm thinking about putting a trailer hitch on there so I can mount a bike rack.

Family also has one of those additional storage racks that goes on a trailer hitch, and since I'm road tripping this summer to pick up a bunch of stuff from my aunt for the apartment, I figure it might be worth looking into.

Any idea where I could go to inquire about this? or how much cost wise I'm looking at?

Thanks .

I have one big warning. Get the CURT Hitch. It's routed over the exhaust. The other 3 (Hidden Hitch and draw tite, Reese) are too close to the exhaust and the paint will bake off and a small part of the bumper cover near the bottom will start to melt.

Otherwise, it's a good solution. They rate it for a full 200lbs tongue weight, But I'd keep it under 150lbs to be safe. I've towed 800lbs wiht it and it does great. I think up to 1000lbs is reasonable. 1500-2000lb pop-up camper would be possible with trailer brakes. The low 1st gear on the manual transmission makes it possible.

I did a search for the Curt hitch. It looks like the right deal!! The photo I saw shows the hitch going under the exhaust?

Under, Over... doesn't matter either way as long as it's not going in front of it. Te other 3 hitches have a bend to go around the end of the pipe. They don't leave enough space and the hot exhaust bakes off the paint and some of it goes over the hitch and can melt part of the bumper cover.

I'm currently working on getting at least a partial refund. They don't warranty the paint, and I'm not interested in litigation. So I sanded and repainted part of the hitch with high temp engine paint. I then fabricated a heat shield to keep the exhaust from going over the hitch.

If hauling is just a one time shot, I'd caution against doing the hitch... For the bike, you can always get a Sirus Bones, they work really well on hatchbacks (I have one, cost me less than $200 and I've used it on my Probe GT, my Loyale, my 'Kik, my mom's Forrester, and my Versa...)

But if you need to be packing and hauling, you could also look at the roof rack for the Versa (they carry the load a little better on the suspension because it is on top, but they can make certain vehicles more likely to tip...)... thoughts...

I searched, unsuccessfully, for a "Sirus Bones." Could you give a little more information?

Thank you.

sorry... Saris...

http://www.orsracksdirect.com/....html

it comes in a Bones (3 bikes - $150 - scroll to bottom) and a Bones 2 (2 bikes - $120)

I bought mine over 6 years ago (and now that I think about it, I may have paid ~$100 for my Bones 2...).
