I <3 the 1st gen. I also <3 my 2nd gen, 2. I love the 1st gen's boxy-squared look. Both 1st and 2nd 2's are a pain to work on. Try replacing the timing belt and water pump with very limited space. It's a pita, but doable. I <3 'em tho.

No. Toyota did not mess up the 2nd gen... it was the 3rd gen, Toyota messed up.

third gen was ok. I wasn't a fan of the looks to be honest.

How did they "mess up" the 3rd gen?

The MR-S is an outstanding car. Very light (lightest of all the MR2's), extremely nimble, rotates very well, best steering ratio of the MR2's, best factory balance of the MR2's (corner and cross weight of a stock MR-S is very well done), etc. I can go on and on.

I only test drove a 3rd gen on the street, so I did not get to push it as hard as the other two gens. No complaints about the handling, it felt great, but I had some other gripes with it.

1. Styling. Second gen had a sleek mini Ferrari look to it, 3rd gen to me was rather frumpy by comparison, kinda like a squished Boxster.
2. The 2nd gen was a removeable hardtop, 3rd gen went to traditional convertible.
Though it had a glass rear window, which was nice, you still had to install a rollbar to play with it on the track. The optional hardtop was overly expensive if I recall. Not so with a miata.
3. The car was lighter, but it also had less power than the 2nd gen. But to be fair, the one I drove was a non turbo. It just didn't feel as sporty to me.
