trading my 240 for an older one iwth friend, is he lying?

my buddy at work has a GF that wants my car, she has a 93 green coupe. We were talking about trading cars, but him giving me the difference between the 2 cars in cash too. He asked how much diff I wanted, and I asked how much his car was worth, he said that a ford dealership offered them 4500 for it. Its manual and has over 110k on it. I have a feeling hes bsing me. Both our cars are in good running condition. My car will have the front end fixed before i trade/sell it to anyone. So if I have a 97 black auto base model and he has a 93 green manual base coupe model, what should I ask difference? My car has only 64k on it, thats nothing considering its about 6 years old now. His car has over 110k, which is alot of miles. My car also has 2 years left on an extended warranty and comes with aftermarket speakers (but no cd player, it crapped out on me). I'd like opinions. I know that no one can give me an exact estimate on what I should get, but I'd like a price range that I should ask for, to trade my car for his car. Thanks!

Just wondering, but why trade? Really like S13's that much? The coupes look pretty horrible in my opinion, but the homeboys around here seem to enjoy putting blingin' rims on them and the fake wood interiors so they have a new ghetto pimp ride but hey....Instead of going with an older, higher mileage, coupe :rolleyes, why not just do an auto-to-manual swap? Probly gunna less of a hassle than dealing with wondering whether or not your friend is d1cking you or vice versa. Plus, you get a more capable engine with far less wear on it. Just my 2 bits...

im going into the military, i leave dec 3rd. I want to have my car loan paid off by then. I also have a student loan to pay off, and a few other expenses, not to mention my insurance is so rediculous right now, anything that helps is good. I like the older 240s and honestly wish I would have gotten one of them instead of my newer one. Making money by trading will help pay off most of the loan.

The only way a Ford dealer (or any dealer for that matter) would have offered him $4500 for that car is if he was planning on buying a car worth over $30,000. Trust me, the amount they offer for your trade has NOTHING to do with the value of the car. They know right off the bat how far they can stretch their numbers.... between the trade price and sale price. They have a window in which to operate and they will often inflate the trade in 'value' to make you feel like you are getting a good deal. This just means they will not come down as far on the selling price of the new vehicle.

This is why some dealers have those, "Bring us ANYTHING and get $1000 trade in!" deals. They sell it to a junk yard or auction for $250 and the $750 difference they already more than made up for on the selling price of the car you just bought. It's all a game to seperate you from your money and put their car in your driveway.

His car is not worth $4500.... period... end of story... not even a question.

Also, after having driven a 97, I doubt you'd like to have that 93... manual or not.

first of all, I would not trade it. A '97 S14 is much nicer than a '93 coupe (bleh, fastbacks are much better) with twice the miles on it too. If you must trade though then I would say ask for about $7-8k in price difference, seing how his is worth $2-3k and yours is probably worth $9-10k...

Or better yet, have him trade in his car for the "$4500" offered and then give you another $5k or something... Then you could get a pretty decent car yourself if you so desired...

dude I can understand wanting to trade... especially if you're under some sort of finantial crunch... I'm in sorta the same spot right now, deciding to buy a S13 or S14.

Assuming you've decided that you want the S13 more (and it sounds like you have), I'd first be straight up with the guy about how much your cars are worth. His is worth probably about $2500-$3000, and yours is worth about $7500 (these numbers are from the KBB). So ask for like $4500-$5000 cash difference.

Show him the blue book values... I cant really think of any way someone can argue against that.

Now that that's outta the way, how come you wish you bought an S13 instead? That's interesting to me, because like I said earlier, I'm trying to decide between the two...

Just so you know, you can still have the car loan while you're in the military, in fact, dealerships have to work with you on this. Someone that went in last month to boot camp had the recruiter help them type up a letter referring to the 'soldiers and sailors relief act'(i think that's right)...and it greatly lowered her interest rate and she still has her new car, plus you get paid as you are in the military so it shouldn't be a problem. And keep the newer one, let your friend go trade his in for 4500(lol) and pay the extra to get a 98,....if ford wants to give him 4500 on a trade in then i guarentee they'd charge atleast 13000 for one like yours if they had it...he won't get 4500...just talk to your recruiter or any other officers you know and get them to help you type up a letter and your interest rate should go down, and you'll still have the better car~
