My wife is looking at buying a new Mazda CX-9 and I'm thinking of using my M56x as the trade in. Thoughts on what it should bring?

2011 M56x
Deluxe Touring and Technology package
53k miles
About as perfect as a 7 year old car gets

I'm assuming the dealership will give me around 20K. Do you think I should try to sell it outright? How much?

Utah goes with Nala, I check both.

The last time I took my car to Nissan they wanted to give me about $27000. I'll see what they offer next time I take it in.

My guess is you're going to be in the low-mid twenties for a trade value. When I was shopping for my M (bought first week of this month), I had some friends with access to the Mannheim auctions provide me with wholesale values. Granted, I was looking at an M37, but to give you a baseline to work off of, the wholesale value of a 2013 M37 with Premium and Deluxe Touring and 40k miles was $21,500. Add a few thousand for the bigger engine and tech package, subtract a bit for the older model years and added miles, and that's where i'm coming up with my guesstimate. Hope that helps - FWIW, you'll love the CX9. The reason I was able to get my M was that we had gotten a new CX9 for my wife, negating the need for me to drive around in a 3 row SUV any longer. We've had our CX9 for almost a year now, and it's been an excellent car - legitimately enjoyable to drive (especially for a big SUV), plenty of room, and very comfortable for trips. Lots of luck!

KBB and NADA are both listing it around $20,500 but multiple dealers are saying around $18k.

Dealer will always low ball you. Be ready to walk out and maybe, just maybe, they'll be under pressure to make a sale and will go up a bit. My dealer offered me like $14k for my car back when it had like 80kmi (trade-in was like $18.5k at the time) and gave me a whole spiel about wholesale, having to auction the car, etc.

And that's what I did, I'm in no hurry to buy. With these prices I'll just wait for the 2018's.

Just a thought. You can stop by any CarMax location and they will provide you with an offer in writing to buy your car. I recently took my SUV in and the price they gave me was about $1,000 less than the used prices I found on dealer lots. I decided not to sell it yet, but I can live with $1,000 less than dealer resale for the peace of mind that IF anything went wrong with the car shortly after selling it to an individual, they will bother me about the repair - also to avoid the assortment of strangers who will call us at all hours, and possibly be casing my home for a future burglary. (I read too many detective stories, I know)
Fetucini has changed her feeling on replacing it now and since it is as pristine as my 09 M35, we decided to just keep it, but when she / we decide what to replace it with, I will likely sell or trade it at CarMax rather than bargaining for a trade at any other dealer.

What surprised me was the difference from one dealer to another. I was trading a car for a subaru and the differences ranged from 3-6k. That's a lot of money. The cars I was looking at were very very close in features and cost . You have to be their worst nightmare.

Put some signs in it and you might be happy.

Good luck

P.S. Looking for cars is fun for me.
