So I've been entertaining an idea lately. I've been thinking about selling my 01 QX4 and buying a 02-04 xterra. If everything would work out the way I'm thinking, I could sell my Q for 9-10k then buy an xterra for 7-8k, put some money into it (bumper, body lift, tires etc), then have some money to pocket.I've been thinking about this for a couple of reasons. First, I'd like to do some more wheeling, and the Q is a rather nice vehicle and I wouldn't want to mess it up. Second, the xterra has A LOT more aftermarket support, and stuff is cheaper because of that.So what do ya'll think? Does anyone know how reliable Xterras are?

That seems a little high to me. I would think you might get $8,000 at most in a private sale. I think if you try to trade for an Xterra you will have to get an 01 or 02 with somewhat higher mileage (over 100,000). I don't think it's a good idea.

I would most definitely being doing a private sale. I did a search on autotrader.com to find the numbers. But yeah, $10k would definitely be pushing it. $9k is most likely what I could get. Most 02-04 Xterras have over 100k miles, and that's not a problem with me.

I can see where thread title might sound misleading. In this scenario, I would be selling my Q out-right, then buying an xterra.

the xterra even slower than the Q, worse handling, torsion bar suspension, cloth seats, cheap interior, is this a real question???

It seems the general consensus is keep the Q, hehe. It was just an idea I was playing around with anyway.

Thanks for everyone's input/votes.

actually, it sounds like the Q is holding you back. If the Xterra will allow you to do what you want in a more efficient and robust fashion, the try to get yourself into an Xterra.

Is it a downgrade...sure. Will that downgrade let you go play more...yes. Since that seems to be the overall goal with selling the Q, the why not sell the Q. If its plushness and limited parts are keeping you from doing what you want to do with the vehicle, then the vehicle is not serving you properly.

Personally, I don't think you need full leather interior to trail riding. The Q is not a Land Rover, nor will it ever be. Cloth seats are fine, unless you must have leather. If that is the case, buy some leather covers from Katzkin. The Xterra is designed the way it is because it is more truck-like and will do the off-road thing better. The Xterra was never designed to be posh.

1 vote to sell the Q.

Gotta agree with K03 on this one. Almost bought a new 03 Xterra, still regret it (ended up buying a new Isuzu Axiom). There is a ton of aftermarket for the Xterra, love the look of the last body style. Slow, yes, but I have a 3.3 so its kind of relative.

I did research the Xterras a bit when i was shopping around for SUVs in the second half of the last year and I remember reading that they are not very reliable. They are alright. Consumer reports recommended them only and specifically from 05 onwards. Ultimately with help from the members here, you included, I decided upon the QX4. I immediately got another QX4 in January this year. My second choice would be the 4runner which I would recommend in your case against the xterra. Basically, 04 or older pathys, any 4runners, or newer xterras would be good choices in my opinion. Perhaps a 99-00 landcruiser even.
