So, I took my 89 240sx out for a ride last night with my rb 20 in it...

Is anyone else having traction problems at above 60 to 80mph?

Like, when I hit the gas, I hear the turbo and all, and the wheels just spin..

Yes. I had to buy Kumho MXs. 265/35/18s.

Still have traction issues, but not quite as bad. Just get drag radials if you want to hook up.

How do you like the kumho, I have 275/35/18s now and its time for a fresh set of tires all the way around.

Stop hard driving in the rain? OR you need new tires. I have a hard time believing you're having zero traction at that speed in a stockish RB20 with slicks..

I like them, they hook ALOT better than my Falkens did. But, they don't have as much traction as i would have liked. Before I bought them, someone said they were comparable to drag radials for traction. I don't think that's true.

I used to break loose easily in 2nd, and a little in 3rd. But with the Kuhmo MXs, I it only breaks loose in first.

I can't launch as hard as I'd like, but for street tires they're very good.

Ace.. this has got to be a joke. 60-80mph and no traction? I highly doubt it is your tires spinning rather your clutch is probably toasted and its just spinning away and getting no power to the wheels. I give the rb20 a ton of credit, but not enough to say it will spin tires while doing 70mph on a stock engine, sorry. Check that clutch

Also, you JUST put this engine in.. why are you beating it to death already? Give it time to break in, the clutch needs time especially. No telling how long that engine sat in a junkyard

This is pretty hard to believe. My car with AM Perfomance elbow/dp, 3" exhaust, and FMIC will only break the car lose mashing the gas in 1st. I have a welded diff. and drift the car and don't think I could get it to just break lose at those speeds in a straight line. I'm on 225/50r16 Kuhmo 711

My car is so fast it spins the tires at idle...

Granted I was on ice in the wendys parking lot

Seriously sounds like your clutch is slipping, I agree with the guys above!!

bald tires aren't the same thing as slicks... although they might look similar

Ehh.. How could you even forget to mention the fact that you were doing this on "slightly wet pavement" with BALD tires (not slicks as you stated).. That REALLY explains a lot.

Yes, that sounds like your problem exactly.

Let me be the first to warn you about that rb20 in your s13 + wet pavement + BALD tires: Be CAREFUL. The car will come around you before you realize it.

I can think of two occasions where I have had to save the car and get the thing under control before slidding off into a ditch. Both times the car put me to the side of the road where I would have to stop and think a minute about what just happend. And that wasnt even with bald tires, slightly worn on the inside but not bald. On one of those occasions I thought it would be cool to punch the gas and spin tires then take off. Yeah, real cool. I ended up facing the opposite direction in the opposite lanes shoulder. Had I performed my stunt 5 seconds prior = head on collision.

Sorry for the long rant, in short, be careful, especially in the rain. It is cool to accelerate hard on dry pavement, just dont tempt fate and do it while its wet. It will save you a lot of heartache in the end.

I hear you :-)

I did that a LOT with my KA, and got the tires spinning to around 60, and accelerate and end up sliding (MAD 1337 Dr1ft style yo... (joke!)) but learned to keep control by messing around....

I do understand with 75 more horsepower that it will break the tires out easier - happened on dry pavement by accelerating a little too quick...

I am learning to control the beast, ill take it slower :-)

Josh

Getting tires soon - until then I will not drive it a whole lot..

When I had my S13 I did something like that on the FWY with light rain. I didn't even try to down shift just a punch in 4th with crappy tires= me checking myself in the rest room when I got home.

I dont get why everyone has such traction issues..I ran 13.6 with a 2.0 60foot on 225`s on 17`s... the only way they will spin through second is if I shift fast into it. I dont know maybe the people who are complaining are rb25 owners mines just rb20 full exhaust and intercooler stock boost.
