I don't know if VDC works in reverse (I don't see why not), but...
On a RWD car you have more traction in the rear while accelerating forward in a straight line, due to mass and load transfer.
Going in reverse transfers the load to the front instead.... causing a big loss in rear wheel traction, and thus much easier wheel spin.
I think it takes more than just wheel spin to activate VDC. For example, if only one wheel spins or if the sensors feel your car oversteering, VDC will kick in.
Try doing the same thing in a parking lot when it rains, and see if it lights up.
