I just bought a 97 QX4, but after driving it a few days I've noticed an issue.

Heading down the freeway, the rpms shot up to about 3500rpms, and the Check engine light turned on. When the rpms go up, my foot is usually just in a steady spot, but as soon as I press on the gas more, the rpms go back down. It happens maybe 5 times a day, not a huge issue, but I would like to fix it.

Took it to autozone, got code P0510 throttle position sensor, so I want to check if that's really what it is.

Anyone have any ideas? Just ask for more info if you have any ideas.

I just got rid of my 97 A8 for transmission problems, and I'm really hoping it's anything else but that with this car.

Thanks guys,

Ps, I'm new here lol

Welcome aboard, Brady!

Definitely sounds like the TPS is haywire. There's a TSB for that issue, it's #98013A. Call the dealer and give them your VIN. Ask if the TSB has been performed on your car. They MAY be able to do the TPS "learn" procedure on the car.

Or, you can do it yourself:

Page 261, if you want to check it out yourself (just need a multimeter and a helper).
