TPS on new wheels? New question!

A great resource for Nissan Sentra, Infiniti G20, 200sx, Pulsar, NX1600, NX2000, Tsuru, Primera and Sunny owners.

So I just got a 2008 Nissan Sentra 2.0L a few days ago and I am already tired of the steelies. My old car that I wrecked (a 2000 Nissan Altima) has some nicer alloy rims (it's the SE level) and it's sitting at a Maaco right now. A couple of employees there are going to buy the car off of me but I decided to ask him if I could take the wheels. He said he'd rather I didn't but then went on to explain that if I were to get new wheels I would have to do something with the Tire Pressure Sensors and that it costs something like $80 a tire to get them put in. I don't know much about TPS systems but is this true? What is the process of putting new wheels (rims) on a car with a TPS system?

Thanks!

All you have to do is transfer the sensor. It shouldn't cost 80 bucks a tire, not even at a dealer, I think it was like $100 to have them swapped over when I was there. The sensors are simple, they're part of the valve stem assembly. Once the tire is off, simply unbolt the sensor and change :).

Okay thanks, I'll probably take a look at them today. Now I have to decide if I want to decline their buy offer so I can keep the rims myself... Unfortunately if they don't buy it I have to pay storage.

So here's the new deal, the guys at Maaco aren't going to buy my car now, they don't have the money apparently. Either way, they aren't going to charge me for storage anymore since they made a mess out of it. Now I have a little time to figure out what I am going to do.

I want to scrap it but take my wheels first!

Can anyone tell me if the stock aluminum alloy rims on a 2000 Nissan Altima SE will fit directly to a 2008 Nissan Sentra S? I can look into changing the sensors over myself. (will the car move if I don't have the sensors on??)

Thanks for any answer you can give me guys, I just need one quick!

I got some additional information. I found out both wheels have specs like this:

4 lug 4.5 inch or 114.3mm High Positive Offset

Now, the Nissan Altima seems like it is 16" x 6" while the Sentra is 16" x 6.5", is this transferable or will I have to get different tires for them?

I am a total noob when it comes to wheels so please help me!

So, anyone that knows more about all of this than I do will be laughing right now. So I was getting pretty upset and turned around not knowing if the wheels from my '00 Altima would fit on this car. Well, I guess, all I had to really do was read the tire itself... same make AND model on both cars. Same size wheels. So anyway, I changed the rear ones today (went to change the first but realized I am going to need a spacer.. my breaks are rubbing the rim on the alloy ones. So my next question (if someone were to answer me before tomorrow) If the rim and the brake are rubbing, how big of a spacer do I need? I would prefer to keep it close enough to the rear tires that it doesn't look ridiculous but I obviously cant have them rubbing off the brakes either...

P.S. I am not switching over the TPMS as of now. (don't have the money) So I will just live with the sensor light being on. called my nissan dealer and they told me they'd put new sensors on and get them all set up for $70. I figure that's worth not messing with it myself.

So there it is, I should have new rims tomorrow, provided I can find spacers at auto zone or o'reillys...

alright guys, this will be the last post in this thread now. I just want everyone to know the personal hell I just went through. So after all the wheel switching last night, I finally got two rims on the back and two steelies on the front (since the rims rubbed the front breaks) So today after hours of hunting I managed to track down some 4 lug spacers (in the MOST ghetto part of STL, go figure) and I threw them on and slapped the rims on the front wheels (and when I say "slap" and "threw" I mean like an hour and half of wheel changing) So then I drive off of Maaco's lot and I get on the highway (don't forget I have spacers now!). I start hearing a LOT of wheel noise (high pitched hum, whatever) and I start getting a little nervous since I had heard horror stories of using spacers. At 65 mph my steering wheel starts shuttering pretty hard so I turned that car around and went straight back to Maaco. I sat there and changed all 8 wheels (two cars) by hand in about 2 hours (and managed to get the right sensors on the right spots in the car). Lesson learned, no wheel spacers, not worth the risk. I am back to my steelies and I am finally happy with the situation lol.

That is all.

Just get the right spacers and you'll be fine.

You can tell just how much you need by stacking washers between the wheel and hub (over the wheel studs) until the wheel clears. You obviously shouldn't drive it like this, but it will tell you how big of a spacer you need. Measure the washer stack, take a wheel to any weld/fab/muffler shop worth their salt, and tell them you need a spacer to that specific width. They'll cut one to match the wheel perfectly, which at that point will be hub-centric (which your other ones probably weren't). Note, if your spacer is too thick, you'll need longer wheel studs so your lugs have more meat to bite on.
