TPMS question.

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Quick question. If I buy another set of stock take off wheels for my EX do I need to get those specific sensors calibrated to my car? These are stock TPMS sensors just off of another car. Does the system read a particular brand or does it only read the sensors I have on the car now.

I would like to mount snow tires on this second set of rims which would allow me to put them on without the pesky TPMS light. I'm wondering if the car will read these sensors or do I need to get them each programmed.

If this sounds confusing I basically just want to know can I take another set of stock wheels off an EX35 and put them on my vehicle and not set the TPMS light off.

The four sensors that are currently on your car are calibrated to your system. Any other TPMS sensor has to be calibrated to your system before it can work.

If you buy new wheels for your car, you can either take the sensors off your old wheels and put them in and they will work fine, or else you have to buy new sensors and have them programmed to the system.

Thanks...that is what I was thinking but was not sure.

I'm trying to find the easiest way to have a snow tire setup...Infiniti has not made it easy. I refuse to drive a brand new car with that STUIPD TPMS light for the winter months...I am also not keen on taking it to the dealership to have the sensor reprogrammed twice a year.

I'm sure the infiniti tool is rather expensive...anyone know of any aftermarket tool that will allow the user to reprogram the TPMS system?

It's not Infiniti's fault - it's the government's. Law was pass requiring TPMS sensors in all new vehicles.

There is no other tool that I've seen or heard of to reset the TPMS aside from the one that the dealer uses. It's a unique system, unlike the OBD II system.

You could always just use the stock wheels and have the snow tires mounted onto them and switch when it gets warm?

I realize the Fed's enacted the law (Thanks Ford/Firestone) but there are other ways companys are doing this. For instance I know some car companys will allow you to program 2 set of monitors to the system. This would allow you to have the snow setup wired and also the summer set wired.

Switing the tires over is not only costly (add's up at 60 dollars a pop) but is also not as easy. I can toss on another set of wheels in 40 mins with a jack or just have them do it at my last "fall oil change".

Thanks for the help none the less.

Just had my 17" snow tires and rims with aftermarket $en$or$ installed on the car to replace the stock 18"s. Been driving it for a week now and TPMS light has NEVER come on. So I am wondering.. are the sensors talking to the car or is the system just not working. Guess one way to find out is let some air out of one tire and see but I had them filled with nitrogen(waste of money?.. maybe) so that is not an option for me . G/F's Vibe was changed over and her light came on briefly, and now it never comes on. Makes one wonder if this technology works like it should?

Just had my winter 17" rims/tires installed today with NO sensors installed. After about 25 mins of driving, the TPMS light began flashing, then in another minute or so, it stayed on solid.

I assume it flashes at first to get your attention. I'm expecting that the next time I start the car, it will flash again, then stay on solid. I'll let you know tomorrow.

Cheers,David

What kind of sensors did you get? Could you please tell me where you got them & what they cost? (If you'd rather not post, just email me.)

Thanks!David

With my former C6 Corvette I bought a TPMS sensor activation box for $100 that looked like a garage door opener. GM designed the system so you could register the sensors without any special software. So you put the system in learn mode and used the activation box to trigger the sensor to send their registration ID to the control module. The EX sensor registration requires connecting to the control module with a computer and using proprietary software to register the new sensors.

I bought a set of the new Michelin Xi2 snows mouted on 17" aftermarket cheapo wheels a few weeks ago. I am going to just deal with the warning light.

Thanks, Ron!

No such thing as FREE shipping for Canadians and of course, we have to account for the monetary exchange too.

Just an update on the TPMS light. I recently had my summer rims and tires installed at Town Fair Tire with new TPMS sensors I purchased myself. When I originally had them done, they said they could "activate" the new sensors, but they did not have the tool to re-set the light. I had planned to have the dealer do it (and pay them for it), when I bring my car in for the steering rack next week. A day or so after I had the new wheels installed, I noticed a steering wheel "shake" at between 65 and 70 MPH. Not bad, but noticable. I took my car back to Town Fair today, and they re-balanced the wheels for free, with no questions asked. The service manager also came up to me and told me they had obtained the re-set tool since my initial visit, because they have had a few other cars that needed re-sets recently that they could not do, and he would take care of the TPMS light for me. Happy to say, the shake is totally gone, and the light is out. Best of all, I did not have to pay the dealership extra to do it.

Ron
