TPMS mandatory install on winter tires??

I'm getting new winter tires installed on my Rogue this week, and my dealership is trying to tell me that I HAVE to get the TPMS installed on the winter tires at an extra cost of $300. From what I understand and read it is NOT mandatory. In my opinion they're just looking for extra money. Anybody else have their dealership try to tell them it's mandatory to have it installed?

Nope, it is not mandatory at all. Yes, the TPMS light on your dash will be on the entire time, but it does not affect anything else. Several members here run without the TPMS sensors in their winter wheels. The dealer is just trying to make more money.

Thanks Nick. I actually called the other Nissan dealership in my area and they confirmed to me that I DO NOT HAVE to install the TPMS on the winter tires. They pretty much said in not so many words, the other dealership is looking to make money. It is not a safety concern, and there are no performance changes....which I knew already. So guess where I'm bringing my car to get the winter tires done. Also, the tires are $200 cheaper.....

Good move, the first dealer doesn't deserve your business.You should call them to let them know they lost another customer because of their fat lies.

Care to let us know which dealer it is? And also the name of the good dealer? I have no sympathy at all for this kind of people and we should put them down as they are bad publicity for their field.

Ya, I'm not amused at all. This is the reason I left Volkswagen after 15 years. They screwed me and they got caught.It's not the first issue I had with this dealer either. Only have 12,000 km on the car and I haven't been impressed with the service at all with this dealership. Had some accessories installed there too (hood deflector, and spoiler) and was not impressed with attention to detail which I also made mention to them. The bad dealer is Ajax Nissan in Ajax Ontario btw. I did have my 12000 km service booked with them this week, but after the whole winter tire ordeal, I called and canceled and told them exactly why. I also did tell them I'm not coming back to their dealership again AND I am calling Nissan Canada and filing a formal complaint against the service dept. at that dealership.

I'm moving over to Midway Nissan (the good dealership) in Whitby, On. See how it goes over there. I have absolutely no patience or tolerance for this kind of crap. Hopefully Midway will be better. Only time will tell.

TPMS is not mandatory in Canada. You can safely remove the sensors.

In the case of the USA...

From what I understand removing the TPMS sensors is OK so long as you don't disable the warning light and system that activates it. Now, that doesn't mean you won't get dinged on a safety inspection or something like that, but you won't go to jail for it either. There are no warranty issues that I am aware of either.

TPMS does not replace proper tire maintenance. You still need to check tire pressures regularly.

This is just proved how useless this system is.The us government mandates this system because people did not maintain their car properly, but even with the system, they still have to do it.It is a lawyer system, just to avoid lawsuits.

It would have been better to try to educate people instead.

Thanks for the extra info Philipa. I know it wasn't mandatory, and I knew it wasn't a safety issue and argued with the dealer for almost 20 minutes on that fact, and I still check my tire pressures weekly AND they still insisted it was mandatory to put the sensors on the winter tires. I know they were just trying to get more money out of me. Especially when I confirmed with a couple of other dealers saying that it wasn't mandatory.Anyway, it's all done. I"m done with the dealer and have put my complaint in to Nissan Canada about this issue, and the other issues I've had since I purchased my car 2 months ago with this service centre.
