I drive a pre-TPMS vehicle, but the federal requirements were discussed by Pat Goss, the resident expert on the PBS "Motorweek" TV show, a year or two ago. Not only is TPMS mandatoy factory equipment after the effective date, but disabling it is a federal offense. (Shades of the mandates about emissions equipment.) Since TPMS is now a federal "safety" item, an inoperative TPMS will also cause the car to fail inspection. Goss said that TPMS sensors in or on the tires--there are apparently two types--are EXTREMELY easy to damage when changing/installing tires on rims. BTW even cars that had "voluntary" factory TPMS before the mandatory deadline will fail inspection if their TPMS is inoperative. (Not so for after-market.) Your federal tax dollars--and Nanny NHTSA-- at work.
