Toyota, Honda stumble as Nissan shines
Toyota's total sales fell to 197,424 units from 224,058 a year ago. Honda has bucked the downtrend in recent months, as its lineup has hit a sweet spot with consumers in the current climate. But the company took a hit along with just about everybody else in July as sales fell 1.6% to 138,744 vehicles from 141,049.
Car sales rose 14% to 90,943 from 79,804, but that was offset by a 22% drop in sales of trucks to 47,801 from 61,245.
"The uncertainties in the market have been quite profound in the past few weeks," said d!ck Colliver, head of American Honda. "We are adjusting our production to meet the rapidly changing needs of buyers and are confident these changes will provide the needed inventory as we move forward."
Nissan Motors riding strong results from cars like the Versa as well as surprising growth on the truck side, reported an 8.5% jump to 95,319 vehicles. Car sales climbed 2.4% to 55,720 units, while sales of trucks increased 18.3% to 39,599, bucking the general industry trend.
