obviusly the VG will out pull the 4 bangers. That said, none of these engines are powerhouses. How heavy a trailer do you plan to pull? I know the VG with the auto trans is rated at 5000 lbs, but it would really struggle with something that heavy, especially if there's any hills around. Half of that is probably more reasonable.

To add, the VG and 4 banger transmissions don't interchange. If you upgrade to a VG (I'd recommend a VG33 from a D22 truck, wiring harness and all), you'll need to swap in a V6 trans.

I'd really be looking for a V8 fullsize to pull a car on a trailer.

Are you serious? A friend of mine pulls cars on a trailer up from Florida with his 95 KA24E Hardbody all the time. A 240 should pose no problem for those trucks I'd think...I could be wrong too.

How fast does he go? I pulled a 64 Corvair on a dual axle flat trailer from San Diego to Orange County, it was deffinately a load on my 95 ka24e, and was highly unsafe at anything above 40mph do to the trailer outweighing my truck probably 2:1. I've also towed a fullsize 86 Olds Delta 88 4door with v6 on a tow dolly. MUCH MUCH safer, and less of a load. Still takes quite a bit of strain to get it going fast. If you're going to tow with a hardbody, go nice and slow and just let the engine take its sweet time.
