I'm guessing that this is something technical as towing the wrong way can hurt the transmission or anything else on the car. I'm curious as to which way I should tow the car? The rear wheels on the dolly or the front on the dolly? I also need to tow the car for roughly 200 miles. Is there anything that I should do to prepare except raise the car 10 ft off of the ground?

Here is my recommendation (hope I am not off-base!):

Preferably, both front and rear wheels off the ground (flatbed is best). If you have to have one set of wheels on the ground, then dolly the drive wheels.

you really cant tow that car that far with an axle on the ground, it would have to be the fronts so youd be putting a lot of trust in your job of securing the wheel straight

i *believe* if you disconnect the driveshaft it would be ok, but im sure you dont want to do that

the best option by far is a flatbed or trailer of some sort

I just got towing services . I'm hella happy right now . Best thing of all, they charged me only 175$ for a flatbed picking up the car 200 miles away.

Might as well talk about my purchase now...

well i guess it dont matter now but maybe for future reference... I towed a car about 120 miles using a U-Haul trailer/flatbed, and it cost i believe somewhere from 50-65 bucks. They dont charge you for milage on the trailer. well ne way goodluck with whatever project you may be working on

Thanks. Yah, but the problem is, I found out that my friend's truck only had a hitch rated for roughly 2000lb's. The car and trailor is more than that, so I was starting to get worried. Not to mention, the car would have had to been on a dolly, which gives me the chance of ruining the drivetrain or transmission. Better safe than sorry.

My plans for this car are to break in the 13's for less than $1,500 while looking good (and yup, this is also including the cost of the car ). Will be a great beater until my parents get that IS350...

towing should be fine.. all you need to do is take off the driveshaft..

What is the reasoning behind not towing on a dolly with the rear axle on the ground? I can understand why you can't do it with an automatic, but why wouldn't you be able to do it with a manual?

Let me set the record straight here.It is acceptable to tow a rwd car with the drive wheels on the ground as long as it has a manual transmission. Gear oil circulates just by the transmission rotating so it will be fine. To be completely safe it might be a good idea to have something on or around the shifter to keep it in neutral...although it is highly unlikely that it will just pop itself into gear. A flat bed is still the best especially for lowered cars so that the rear end and exhaust don't scrape the ground.

Automatics need the engine running to pump fluild through the transmission to keep it lubricated. Tow an auto with the rear wheels down and you run the risk of damaging the transmission. You would have to disconnect the driveshaft, tow with the front wheels down or flatbed it. If you drag the front wheels you need a way to lock the steering into place which is also difficult.

Cliffs notes:Manual trans = can tow with rear wheels down, flatbed is still best (no scratches on fart can)Autotrans = flatbed best

Uhaul will tell you differently but its just a liability thing.

your buddies truck should also be fine towing the car as long as its a class2 hitch. Uhaul will ask you what your towing with say truck X with a class 2 hitch rated to 3500lbs and tell them your towing a civic and they won't bother you. Should be 39.95 + tax / day at least thats what it was when I quit. Make sureyo uhave a 2" ball and if you can try to make the reservation through one of the mom and pop stores as they will hastle you less than the uhaul owned places

Thanks Ligouri. That's exactly what I thought. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't something specific to the 240 that would make this situation different. I know it sounded like a goofy question coming from a fellow ME, but I tend to get a bit paranoid when I read something on here that sounds a bit odd and could result in some horrific consequences. Thanks for the confirmation. Take care.
