I've towed quite a bit with my Versa. It does an excellent job. .. for a compact car. It tows as well or better than my '03 Corolla which was rated at 1500lbs. On steeper hills you do need to downshift to 5th at freeway speeds. Otherwise I towed a 900lb trailer (600lb motorcycle+300lb trailer) and the car was loaded down with 2 adults and luggage for a week plus riding gear. The rear end bottomed out occasionally, but the car was MORE stable
I towed my motorcycle from Iowa to Central Colorado (Colorado Springs, Aspen and Estes Park) including going over Independence Pass, Loveland Pass, Vail Pass along with Tennessee and Hoosier Passes. On Loveland Pass I maintained 45mph in 3rd gear and was still passing semi's so I figured that was good enough.
Since then I've towed my new, larger touring motorcycle which is almost 650lbs. No problems.
Get the Curt hitch. It's a better design than the Hidden Hitch, Drawtite and Reese. I'd also consider getting a air ride hitch. Check out "Air Safe Hitches" on the internet. I have one and it isolates 70-80% of the vibration and motion of the trailer.
I'd be comfortable towing a boat/trailer up to about 1500lbs if it had trailer brakes. I wouldn't tow more than 1000lbs without trailer brakes.
I wouldn't tow more than 1000lbs with the CVT.
